How to use this calculator

For weighted grades, enter matching score and weight lists. Weights may add to any positive total; the calculator normalizes them. For a final exam target, enter your current grade excluding the final, the final's share of the whole course, and your desired overall grade.

Formula and method

Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σweights. Required final score = [target − current grade × (1 − final weight/100)] ÷ (final weight/100).

Worked example

Scores of 90, 80, and 95 with weights 30, 30, and 40 give 89%. With a current grade of 85%, a final worth 30%, and a target of 90%, the required final score is about 101.67%, which exceeds a standard 100% exam.

Assumptions and limits

Scores are limited to 0–100 and weights are nonnegative. Extra credit, dropped assignments, category-specific rules, letter-grade cutoffs, and instructor rounding are not modeled. Always compare the result with your syllabus.

Common questions

Do weights need to add to 100?

No. For weighted grades, any positive total works because each weight is divided by the sum. Use only completed work if you want your current grade.

What does a required score above 100% mean?

The target is not reachable on a standard 100-point exam under these assumptions. A negative required score means the target is already met even with a zero on the final.
