System of Equations

A system of equations is a set of equations solved together.

AlgebraGrade 8Algebra 1GEDSATACT

What it means

For two linear equations, the solution is the point that makes both equations true.

Also called: simultaneous equations

Examples

y = x + 1 and y = 2x – 3
The solution is where the two lines intersect
(4, 5) can be a solution if both equations are true

Common mistake

A point must satisfy every equation in the system, not just one.

Question: If y = x + 2 and y = 6 when x = 4, does (4, 6) fit the first equation?

Show answer
