A linear equation is an equation whose graph is a straight line.

What it means

In one variable, it usually has a variable to the first power. In two variables, it can be written in forms like y = mx + b.

Also called: first-degree equation

Examples

2x + 5 = 17
y = 3x – 4
4x – 2y = 10

Common mistake

An equation with x^2 is not linear.
