PMP Course Audit: Update Your Study Plan (2027 Prep)
You bought a PMP course last year, filled a notebook and then noticed that the exam changed in July 2026. Should you start again? Keep the notebook open. You can check its coverage against the current outline before spending money on a replacement.
An older lesson on resolving a team disagreement may still teach useful reasoning, while its exam overview could give you outdated percentages. Audit those parts separately. PMI says the core principles and approaches remain relevant, and its update page directs candidates using older materials toward current preparation resources. Begin with the outline, then open your course
Download the current July 2026 Examination Content Outline, or ECO, from PMI. It describes the tested responsibilities and their supporting examples. Use it as the reference for this audit, with the course contents alongside it and room to record where each lesson actually teaches the skill. PMI: July 2026 Examination Content Outline
Ignore the cover date for a moment. A course can display 2026 on its sales page while retaining an old exam overview inside, so open the lesson itself and note its revision date or the provider's documented change log.
The blank course-audit.csv gives you a place to record that evidence. It contains a few starting prompts and empty rows for the rest of your review, rather than a complete official crosswalk or a claim that a particular provider meets every requirement. Download the blank course audit (CSV)
Check the percentages your plan is built around
PMI compares the previous and current domain weights as follows. People moves from 42% to 33%, Process from 50% to 41%, and Business Environment from 8% to 26%. These percentages describe the exam blueprint. PMI: July 2026 exam update and training guidance
Check your course's overview first. If it still lists 42/50/8 as current, mark that lesson for correction and inspect how the rest of the course treats Business Environment. The old overview alone cannot tell you whether its teaching examples are useful.
| Domain | Previous | July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| People | 42% | 33% |
| Process | 50% | 41% |
| Business Environment | 8% | 26% |
Use a ten-hour example to see the planning effect
Suppose you have ten hours available for a first revision pass and choose, purely as a starting exercise, to divide those hours in proportion to the current domain weights. This is an illustrative planning method. If your notes show a clear weakness in one domain, give that area extra time.
People: 10 x 0.33 = 3.3 hours = 3 hours 18 minutes.
Process: 10 x 0.41 = 4.1 hours = 4 hours 6 minutes.
Business Environment: 10 x 0.26 = 2.6 hours = 2 hours 36 minutes.
Together, those allocations total ten hours. Under the previous percentages, the same calculation would have assigned only 48 minutes to Business Environment. That is a difference of 108 minutes, or 1 hour 48 minutes, in this particular example.
Now adjust for your evidence. If you can already explain a governance decision but struggle with a delivery tradeoff, use some of the available time to work through the tradeoff and record what changed your reasoning. Blueprint percentages do not prescribe study hours or predict your result.
Test whether an older lesson still teaches the task
Consider a fictional course with a conflict lesson, a delivery module and a short section on organizational policies. This fictional course helps demonstrate the audit, and its lessons do not describe any named provider.
Start with the conflict lesson. After reading it, explain the source of a disagreement and why the proposed response fits that situation. Then locate the relevant responsibility under People in the current ECO. If your notes contain only a definition and a memorized slogan, record the missing application exercise.
For the delivery module, inspect whether the worked example connects the chosen delivery option to an expected benefit and a way to observe that benefit. Process Task 3 is a useful reference for this check. Record the lesson page or timestamp so you can return to the evidence, rather than ticking a box because the word value appears. Try a small fictional example. A team can release a booking reminder now or wait two months for a larger system change. A useful discussion would identify the expected reduction in missed appointments, explain how to measure it and consider the constraints on releasing early. The preferred action depends on those facts. No extra project facts are supplied here, so this example has no scored best answer.
For the policies section, ask where it explains who can approve a decision and when a problem needs escalation. Compare that explanation with Business Environment Task 1. Keep useful reasoning, then write a specific gap beside anything the course leaves unanswered. PMI: July 2026 Examination Content Outline
Inspect the practice experience
The current ECO describes 180 questions in 240 minutes, including ten unscored pretest questions. The document also describes case/scenario and graphic-based question experiences, so compare your practice tool with the full format and modality details in that document. PMI: July 2026 Examination Content Outline
Open your practice tool. Does it ask you to interpret the information presented, or do its explanations mostly repeat a term from a glossary? During a case walkthrough, note which detail affected the decision and which detail you initially overlooked. That gives your next review session a concrete job.
Treat a simulator's percentage as evidence about that simulator. Difficulty, coverage and scoring can differ from the real exam, so a score from an older bank cannot establish readiness for the current test. A provider should be able to explain what it revised and which current outline its questions address.
Separate content coverage from training eligibility
Your coverage audit answers whether a resource helps you prepare for the current exam. Training-hour eligibility is a separate check. Save the completion record and verify the course delivery type, provider and completion date against PMI's current requirements before relying on it in an application.
As checked on October 11, PMI lists a December 1, 2026 change for eligible live-training providers and says training completed before that date remains eligible under the current requirements. It gives separate guidance for self-paced courses. Follow the linked rules for your situation instead of assuming that a content gap cancels earlier training hours. Write a small repair plan before buying another course
Finish the audit with named actions. An entry such as watch updated Business Environment lesson 4 and explain its escalation example is easier to complete than review business topics. Give each gap a resource and a next check date, using the notes column to capture the evidence you still need.
Ask the provider for its update record. A precise request would name the outdated overview you found and ask where the course now covers the corresponding current task. If the answer points you to a revised lesson, inspect it before paying for overlapping material elsewhere.
