Heart, Blood, and Blood Vessels
Your heart beats about 100,000 times a day, pushing blood through a network of vessels long enough to wrap around the Earth more than twice. The circulatory system delivers oxygen and nutrients to every cell and carries away waste. Knowing its main parts and how blood flows is a reliable source of test questions.

The circulatory system moves blood through the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients and remove waste. The heart is a muscular pump, blood is the fluid that carries materials, and blood vessels are the tubes that carry blood. The three main vessels are arteries, veins, and capillaries.
How does the heart pump blood?
The heart is a muscle divided into four chambers: two upper atria that receive blood and two lower ventricles that pump it out. The right side sends oxygen-poor blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen, and the left side pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. Valves between the chambers keep blood flowing in one direction only, which is what produces the familiar “lub-dub” heartbeat.
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries carry blood away from the heart and have thick, muscular walls to handle the high pressure of each pump. Veins carry blood back to the heart and have thinner walls plus valves to keep blood from flowing backward. Capillaries are tiny, thin-walled vessels where the actual exchange happens: oxygen and nutrients pass out to cells, and waste passes in.

What does blood carry?
Blood is a tissue made of several parts. Red blood cells carry oxygen using a protein called hemoglobin. White blood cells fight infection. Platelets help blood clot to stop bleeding. And plasma, the liquid part, carries nutrients, hormones, and waste. Together these components make blood the body’s delivery and defense fluid.
