Social class

Resources such as time, money, schedule control, civic skill, and organizational contact lower the cost of participation, while workplace and economic experience can shape which policies appear personally consequential.

A turnout gap may reflect time, money, civic skills, recruitment, or residential stability. Report the class measure and turnout denominator, then test the proposed resource pathway instead of treating a broad income category as the direct cause.

Class is multidimensional. Income measures current resources, wealth captures accumulated security, education develops skills and credentials, and occupation structures workplace experience and networks. These measures can produce different political expectations. State which dimension is observed and which mechanism is proposed rather than treating a broad class label as a direct cause of one vote or attitude. A higher-income voter may possess time and money for participation but disagree politically with another voter who has similar income and different occupation, union membership, debt, or community ties. Resources affect opportunities to act; they do not mechanically determine the direction of political choice. Two households with equal income but different savings, job security, and schedules may face very different costs when volunteering or contacting officials.
