Differential Association and Social Learning
Edwin Sutherland’s differential association theory proposes that criminal behavior is learned through interaction with other people, especially within important relationships. People learn techniques, motives, rationalizations, and definitions favorable or unfavorable to law violation.
The theory does not say that contact with any offender causes crime. Frequency, duration, priority, and intensity shape the influence of an association. One respected mentor who repeatedly teaches and justifies fraud may matter more than several casual acquaintances who disapprove.
Technique and definition work together. A new employee may learn which expense fields to alter and hear that the change merely recovers money the company unfairly withheld. The first lesson supplies skill. The second supplies a favorable definition. Mere presence among coworkers would not demonstrate differential association without evidence of transmission.
Related social learning theory of deviance adds imitation and reinforcement. Praise, money, status, relief from ridicule, and absence of punishment can strengthen conduct after it occurs. Observing a respected colleague profit without penalty can also change expectations about likely consequences. The named theory is more specific than the broad social learning involved whenever people acquire culture or roles.
The two learning accounts overlap, but their closest evidence differs. Differential association asks what definitions and techniques significant associates communicate. Reinforcement asks what reward or cost follows the conduct. A study can measure both because teaching and reward often occur in the same network.
Strain theory asks a different question. Suppose an employee falsifies sales records. Evidence that promotion goals remain strong while legitimate routes are blocked supports strain. Evidence that coworkers teach the method and redefine it as team loyalty supports differential association. Evidence that bonuses follow each falsified report supports reinforcement. The outward act stays fixed while the causal relationship changes.
Learning theory applies beyond street offenses. Corporate staff can learn price fixing, false reporting, or unsafe shortcuts as ordinary occupational practice. High status does not remove social learning. It changes the setting and sometimes the resources available to conceal the conduct.
The theory is probabilistic rather than deterministic. People interpret what they learn, encounter competing definitions, anticipate sanctions, and can leave a relationship. Social learning changes the likelihood of conduct without writing a fixed outcome into a person.
Evidence should establish sequence. Researchers can observe training, communication, peer approval, and conduct over time. Asking only whether current friends offend cannot show whether the friendship caused the conduct or formed after it. Longitudinal and network evidence can help distinguish influence from selection into similar groups.
Peer similarity creates a hard evidence problem because selection can resemble learning. Teenagers may become friends because they already share attitudes toward shoplifting, or a friendship may change those attitudes. A longitudinal network study measures each person’s conduct and beliefs before ties form, records new ties, and checks whether later change follows exposure. If similarity exists before friendship, selection has support. If definitions and techniques change after repeated contact while earlier beliefs are held constant, influence becomes more plausible.
An intervention can sharpen the test. Imagine two stores that employ similar teams and use the same sales targets. One rotates new workers among several mentors, while the other assigns each newcomer to one experienced worker for six months. Researchers could record which justifications mentors communicate, which techniques newcomers acquire, and what consequences follow questionable sales. A stronger mentor-linked pattern in the long assignment condition would fit transmission through intense, durable ties. If misconduct instead follows bonuses regardless of mentor messages, reinforcement has the stronger evidence. If newcomers with prior favorable attitudes choose the most permissive mentors, selection remains a rival. This design separates who associates, what is communicated, and what happens after the conduct rather than treating a deviant peer count as the mechanism itself.
Media exposure can enter the analysis, though Sutherland emphasized intimate groups because close ties carry repeated messages and social weight. A clip that demonstrates a technique supplies possible learning material. Evidence that valued peers discuss it, reward it, and help perform it makes the mechanism much stronger.
Quick review: Ask what was communicated and what followed. Techniques and favorable definitions point to differential association. Rewards, punishment, and modeled consequences point to social learning. Blocked approved means point to strain.
