The conversions

A fraction becomes a decimal by dividing; a decimal becomes a percent by multiplying by 100; a percent becomes a fraction over 100, then simplified. The solution panel shows the route each time.

Common fraction, decimal and percent equivalents

Knowing these by heart makes most conversion questions quick. Many others build from them. For example, 3/5 is three times 1/5, so it is 0.6 or 60%, and 5/8 is 1/2 + 1/8, so it is 0.625 or 62.5%. The thirds never end as decimals, so write them with a bar or the dots shown here, and round only when a question asks you to.

How can I convert a fraction to a decimal?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. For 7/20, 7 ÷ 20 = 0.35. A shortcut works when the denominator can be scaled to 10, 100 or 1,000: multiply the top and bottom of 7/20 by 5 to get 35/100, which you can write right away as 0.35. Use long division for denominators like 3, 6 or 7.

How do you convert decimals, fractions and percentages?

Use the decimal as the middle step. To go from decimal to percent, multiply by 100; to go to a fraction, write it over a power of 10 and simplify. For 0.85, the percent is 85%, and the fraction is 85/100 = 17/20. To go from a percent back to a decimal, divide by 100.

How do you convert a decimal to a fraction?

Write the digits over 10, 100 or 1,000, using one zero for each decimal place, then simplify. For 0.64, there are two decimal places, so write 64/100. Both numbers divide by 4, giving 16/25. Check by dividing: 16 ÷ 25 = 0.64. For 2.5, write 25/10, which simplifies to 5/2.

What is the relationship between fractions and decimals?

They are two ways to write the same value. A decimal is a fraction whose denominator is a power of 10, so 0.7 means 7/10. A fraction in simplest form ends as a decimal only when its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. So 7/40 = 0.175 ends, but 5/6 = 0.8333… repeats.

What grade learns converting fractions to decimals?

Under the Common Core, students start in grade 4 by writing fractions with denominators of 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 3/10 = 0.3 and 62/100 = 0.62. In grade 7 they convert any fraction to a decimal using long division and learn that the result either ends or repeats. Percents come in between, in grade 6.

Check the value, not just the digits

Use 3/4 = 0.75 = 75% as a reference. Three quarters is less than one whole, so its decimal must be less than 1 and its percent less than 100%. A result of 750% would be ten times too large.

Decimal to fraction: 0.35 means 35 hundredths. Write 35/100 and divide both numerator and denominator by 5 to get 7/20. Percent to decimal: 8% means 8/100, so it is 0.08, not 0.8. More than one whole: 1.25 = 125/100 = 5/4 = 125%.

A focused review routine

Before checking an answer, write the requested form and one conversion step on paper. After feedback, record the specific error: for example, “8% became 0.8; divide the percent number by 100.” Try another conversion using that rule. Return later and explain why the forms represent the same amount.
