Hourly to Salary Calculator

To turn an hourly wage into a yearly salary, multiply the rate by the hours you are paid in a year. A full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year. For salary to hourly, divide instead: $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25. The hourly to salary calculator below also handles overtime and time off.

Paid weeks: use 52 if your vacation and holidays are paid; enter unpaid time as unpaid days, or lower the weeks (50 = two unpaid weeks). Overtime: under the federal FLSA, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek; it is counted only in weeks you actually work.

  1. Hours in a work day: 40 hours a week ÷ 5 days = 8 hours a day.
  2. Paid days a year: 5 days × 52 paid weeks = 260 paid days.
  3. Paid hours a year: 260 days × 8 hours = 2,080 hours. This is the standard full-time year: 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours.
  4. Yearly base pay: $25.00 an hour × 2,080 paid hours = $52,000.00.
  5. Pay periods: monthly = $52,000.00 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33; semimonthly = ÷ 24 = $2,166.67; biweekly = ÷ 26 = $2,000.00; weekly = ÷ 52 paid weeks = $1,000.00.
  6. Hours you actually work: (260 − 16 paid days off) × 8 = 1,952 hours. Base pay per hour worked: $52,000.00 ÷ 1,952 = $26.64. Your paid time off is worth $3,200.00 a year.
A full calendar year is 52 weeks plus 1 day (2 in a leap year), so some years have 261 or 262 weekdays instead of 260. The federal government divides yearly pay by 2,087 hours for this reason; most employers use 2,080.

Want to know what lands in your bank account? Take your gross pay to the paycheck calculator to subtract federal and state tax, Social Security, Medicare and 401(k).
All figures are gross pay before taxes and deductions. Weekly, daily and hourly figures are per paid week, day and hour; monthly, semimonthly and biweekly figures spread your yearly pay evenly. Overtime rules and paid time off depend on your job, your state and your employer. This is an estimate, not financial or legal advice.

How to use the hourly to salary calculator

  1. Pick Hourly to salary if you know your hourly rate, or Salary to hourly if you know your pay for a year, month, semimonthly or biweekly paycheck, week or day.
  2. Enter your hours per week, days per week and paid weeks per year. Keep 52 weeks if your vacation and holidays are paid.
  3. Add paid vacation days and paid holidays, and any unpaid days off. Paid days off do not change your pay, but they show what you really earn per hour worked. Unpaid days lower your yearly pay.
  4. If you are paid overtime, enter your average overtime hours per week and the overtime rate (1.5× is the federal minimum).
  5. Read the answer, open Show steps for the working, and check the conversion table for every pay period.

Hourly to salary formula

Yearly pay = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks per year

Hours per week are your regular (not overtime) hours. Paid weeks per year include weeks of paid vacation. For unpaid time off, subtract those hours first: unpaid days × hours per day.

Going the other way, the salary to hourly formula is:

Hourly rate = yearly salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)

To get the yearly salary from a smaller period, multiply first: monthly pay × 12, semimonthly pay × 24, biweekly pay × 26, weekly pay × paid weeks. Then the other periods follow from the year: monthly = year ÷ 12, semimonthly = year ÷ 24, biweekly = year ÷ 26, weekly = year ÷ 52.

Why a full-time year is 2,080 hours

A standard full-time schedule is 40 hours a week, and 52 weeks × 40 hours = 2,080 hours. A handy mental shortcut: double the hourly rate, add three zeros, then add 4%. For $20 an hour, 20 × 2 = 40 gives $40,000, and 4% more is the exact figure, 20 × 2,080 = $41,600.

A calendar year is a little longer than 52 weeks: 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day, and a leap year is 52 weeks and 2 days. So some years have 261 or 262 weekdays instead of 260. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) divides federal employees’ yearly pay by 2,087 hours, the average over a long run of years, instead of 2,080. For most private jobs, 2,080 is the number to use.

Paid holidays and paid vacation are part of those 2,080 hours. If you get 10 vacation days and 6 holidays, you are paid for 2,080 hours but work only 1,952 of them, so a $52,000 salary is worth $52,000 ÷ 1,952 = $26.64 per hour actually worked.

Biweekly vs semimonthly: 26 or 24 paychecks

These two pay schedules sound alike but are not. Biweekly means every two weeks, usually on the same weekday, so there are 52 ÷ 2 = 26 paychecks a year. Semimonthly means twice a month on fixed dates, such as the 15th and the last day, so there are 12 × 2 = 24 paychecks.

Yearly pay is the same, so each semimonthly check is larger. On a $60,000 salary, a biweekly check is $60,000 ÷ 26 = $2,307.69 and a semimonthly check is $60,000 ÷ 24 = $2,500.00, a difference of $192.31 per check. With biweekly pay, two months each year bring three paychecks, which many people use for savings. Because a year is 52 weeks plus a day or two, a biweekly schedule picks up a 27th payday about once every 11 years.

How overtime changes your yearly pay

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), a covered, non-exempt employee must be paid at least one and one-half times the regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. The U.S. Department of Labor defines a workweek as a fixed, recurring period of 168 hours (seven consecutive 24-hour days), and hours cannot be averaged across two or more weeks. The FLSA does not require double time or extra pay for weekends or holidays as such; those are matters of agreement, and some states add their own rules, such as daily overtime.

The calculator pays overtime hours at 1.5 × your hourly rate and counts them only in weeks you actually work, not on paid days off. If you are exempt, leave overtime at 0.

Worked examples

Example 1: $20 an hour to a yearly salary

Full time, 40 hours a week, paid all 52 weeks: $20 × 40 × 52 = $20 × 2,080 = $41,600 a year. Per pay period that is $41,600 ÷ 12 = $3,466.67 a month, $41,600 ÷ 26 = $1,600.00 every two weeks, and $41,600 ÷ 52 = $800.00 a week.

Example 2: $60,000 salary to an hourly rate

$60,000 ÷ 2,080 hours = $28.846…, which rounds to $28.85 an hour. If the same job needs 45 hours a week with no overtime pay, the real rate drops to $60,000 ÷ (45 × 52) = $60,000 ÷ 2,340 = $25.64 an hour.

Example 3: hourly pay with overtime and paid time off

You earn $18 an hour for 40 hours a week, 52 paid weeks, with 10 paid vacation days and 6 paid holidays, and you work 6 overtime hours in a normal week.

  1. Base pay: $18 × 2,080 = $37,440.00.
  2. Weeks actually worked: (260 paid days − 16 days off) ÷ 5 = 48.8 weeks.
  3. Overtime: 6 × 48.8 = 292.8 hours at $18 × 1.5 = $27.00, so $27.00 × 292.8 = $7,905.60.
  4. Yearly pay: $37,440.00 + $7,905.60 = $45,345.60, or $3,778.80 a month.

Common mistakes when converting pay

  • Treating a month as 4 weeks. A month averages 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks. $1,000 a week is $4,333.33 a month, not $4,000.
  • Mixing up biweekly and semimonthly. Multiply a biweekly check by 26 and a semimonthly check by 24.
  • Subtracting paid vacation. Paid days off are still paid hours. Only unpaid time lowers the yearly total.
  • Ignoring extra hours on a salary. A salary spread over 50 hours a week is a lower hourly rate than the same salary over 40.
  • Comparing gross with net. These figures are before taxes; use the paycheck calculator for take-home pay.

Results are estimates of gross pay for planning and comparing job offers. They are not financial, tax or legal advice; your employer’s pay policy, your state’s laws and your overtime status decide what you are actually paid.

Frequently asked questions

How much is $20 an hour a year?

At 40 hours a week for 52 paid weeks, $20 an hour is $20 × 2,080 = $41,600 a year before taxes. That is $3,466.67 a month, $1,600 every two weeks or $800 a week. At 50 paid weeks it is $40,000.

How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you are paid in a year. For a 40-hour week that is 2,080 hours, so $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 an hour. If you are paid monthly, multiply by 12 first; biweekly, by 26; semimonthly, by 24.

Does a salary include paid vacation and holidays?

Yes, if your employer pays for them: a salary covers all 52 weeks, including paid days off. Federal law (the FLSA) does not require paid vacation or holidays, so it depends on your employer's policy. Paid time off raises what you earn per hour actually worked.

Do salaried employees get overtime?

Some do. Being paid a salary does not by itself make you exempt from the FLSA. Non-exempt salaried employees are owed at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek; exempt employees are not. Check your status with your employer.

How many paychecks are there in a year?

Weekly pay gives 52 paychecks, biweekly 26, semimonthly 24 and monthly 12. A biweekly schedule occasionally has 27 paydays in one calendar year.
