Frequently Asked Questions
Are these questions the same as the real ACT Aspire?
No – actual ACT Aspire items aren’t released publicly. These are hand-picked sample questions modeled on the format, topics, and difficulty your child will see on the grade 3 test.
How many questions are on the real ACT Aspire Math?
The grade 3 ACT Aspire Math test has 36 questions in 65 minutes. Item types include multiple choice, technology-enhanced (drag-and-drop, hot spot, multi-select), and a few constructed-response items.
Is a calculator allowed on the 3rd grade ACT Aspire?
No. Calculators aren’t permitted on the grade 3 ACT Aspire. Your child needs multiplication facts through \(10\times 10\) memorized and should be able to do multi-digit arithmetic by hand.
When is the ACT Aspire given?
The grade 3 ACT Aspire is given in the spring, usually March-May. The exact dates vary by state and district. Most schools run all four subjects (math, reading, English, science) across a single test week.
Which states use ACT Aspire?
Arkansas, Alabama, and a handful of other states have used ACT Aspire as their grade 3 accountability test. Several states have switched to other tests recently, but ACT Aspire still appears at district level and in schools that stayed with it.
What’s a passing score?
ACT Aspire reports a 400-460 scale score plus a readiness benchmark. The grade 3 readiness benchmark for math is around 414. “Ready” or above means your child is on track for college-readiness at that grade.
Can my child retake the ACT Aspire?
No formal retake at grade 3. The test is given once per year per grade, and the spring score is the score of record. Low scores trigger extra classroom support the next year but don’t cause retention.
What topics should we focus on first?
Start with multiplication and division within 100 – they anchor much of the grade 3 ACT Aspire. Then fractions on a number line, perimeter and area, multi-digit place value, and multi-step word problems.
Does ACT Aspire follow Common Core?
Yes – ACT Aspire is aligned to the Common Core State Standards plus ACT’s College and Career Readiness Standards. Grade 3 math content matches Common Core almost exactly, so Common Core prep materials work well.

EffortlessMath has a full-length 3rd Grade ACT Aspire Math practice test, the Top 10 ACT Aspire Math sample questions, and the Mastering Grade 3 Math workbook covering every Common Core grade 3 topic with worked examples.
