Every strong essay has a backbone — one sentence that tells the reader exactly where you stand. Without it, even good evidence feels scattered. With it, everything you write points in the same direction. That backbone is your thesis, and writing a clear one is the single best thing you can do for your score.

A thesis is a single sentence stating which passage is better supported and, briefly, why. It answers the prompt directly — not “both sides have points,” but “Passage A makes the stronger argument because it relies on facts and examples while Passage B relies on emotion.”

What Makes a Thesis Focused

A focused thesis does three things at once. It names a winner — it says plainly which passage is better supported. It gives a reason — it hints at why, usually because one side uses stronger evidence. And it is specific — it avoids fence-sitting phrases like “both sides are good” or “it depends.” Compare two openings. Weak: “This is a hard issue with two sides.” Strong: “Passage A is better supported because it uses statistics and expert testimony, while Passage B relies mostly on emotional appeals.” The second tells the reader your judgment and your reasoning in one breath. That single sentence then becomes a promise: the rest of your essay simply proves it.

Where the Thesis Goes

Put your thesis at the end of your introduction, where the reader expects it. Everything after it should support it. Each body paragraph you write should connect back to the reason in your thesis — if your thesis says Passage A wins on evidence, your paragraphs show that evidence. A helpful test: after drafting, reread your thesis and ask, “Does every paragraph help prove this?” If a paragraph drifts, either fix the paragraph or sharpen the thesis. Writing the thesis first, before your body paragraphs, keeps your whole essay on track and stops you from wandering into summary or opinion. Think of it as the map you hand the reader at the door.
