Turn a graph into an AP free-response answer
A graph becomes an AP free-response answer only when every requested feature is visible and the prose explains the mechanism.
AP Microeconomics free-response questions award points for scoreable economic evidence. A correct conclusion may not earn a graph point when an axis or curve is unlabeled. A correct number may not earn a calculation point when the setup is hidden. Before solving, read the command verb and decide what the reader must be able to see.

Build the graph in a point-protecting order
- Label both axes. Use the correct variables and units when supplied.
- Draw and name the required curves. Market demand is not a firm’s marginal-revenue curve; labor supply is not marginal resource cost in monopsony.
- Mark the initial outcome. Show the original price, wage, quantity, or output decision before changing the model.
- Introduce only the stated change. Shift the affected curve or add the required wedge, price line, or marginal curve.
- Mark the new outcome. Use dashed guide lines when they make a price or quantity unambiguous.
- Explain the mechanism in words. The graph supports the prose; it does not replace it.
The labels make the result scoreable: demand shifts from D1 to D2, and equilibrium moves from E1 to E2, raising both price and quantity.
A complete explanation for this graph could read: “An increase in demand creates excess demand at the original price. The market price rises, causing quantity supplied to increase along the supply curve, until a new equilibrium forms at a higher price and quantity.” The middle link—excess demand and movement along supply—shows the mechanism.
Turn calculations into economic statements
When the question says calculate, write the relationship before substituting. Suppose a worker’s marginal product is 6 units and each extra unit adds $14 to the firm’s revenue:
MRP = MP × MR = 6 units × $14 per unit = $84 per worker
The units reveal what the answer means and catch errors such as adding 6 and 14. For an area, write the base and height of the rectangle or triangle. For an elasticity calculation, show the percentage changes and the midpoint denominator when the prompt supplies two endpoints.
Write causal chains, not unsupported conclusions
“The wage rises.”
Strong response:
“Higher demand for the product raises the marginal revenue product of labor, shifting labor demand right; the competitive market wage and employment therefore rise.”
The stronger response identifies the initiating event, the affected marginal value, the curve shift, and the requested outcomes.
Long FRQs often connect models. A monopoly change can affect labor demand; a tariff can change domestic production and surplus; an externality policy can alter a firm’s marginal cost. Before redrawing everything, write a causal chain with arrows on scratch paper. Then decide which link belongs in a graph, which requires a number, and which needs a sentence.
- Every response is attached to the correct part label.
- Every graph has both axes and named curves.
- Every requested price, wage, quantity, area, equilibrium, or shift appears.
- Every calculation shows its setup and unit.
- Every explanation contains a causal mechanism.
- Arrows, labels, and guide lines are readable and unambiguous.
Do not add curves the prompt does not need. Extra lines create opportunities for contradiction. A clean graph with the required economic story is stronger than an elaborate graph whose labels compete for attention.
