What to review for Optional Essay

The CLT optional essay is a separate 30-minute writing task for in-school testers. It is currently unavailable on the remotely proctored CLT and does not affect the exam’s numerical score. Confirm the option for your test date and administration.

Read the prompt closely

Define the task

Identify the question, purpose, audience, and any requested response before planning.

Choose a focused claim

Make your position clear

Write a direct thesis that answers the prompt and gives the essay a clear direction.

Develop reasons and support

Build a coherent response

Use specific reasoning and relevant examples to explain the position; connect each paragraph to the central claim.

Organize the draft

Guide the reader

Use a logical sequence, clear transitions, and a conclusion that follows from the argument.

Reserve a short review

Check clarity

Leave time to review focus, paragraph order, sentence clarity, grammar, and word choice.

Use the official CLT content brief and the current test information for the administration you plan to take. CLT, CLT10, and CLT3–8 have different purposes and formats.

A practical study route

Turn the outline into focused practice

  1. Check your test format. The optional essay is available to in-school testers and not currently offered on the remotely proctored CLT.
  2. Practice with a separate prompt. Use an independent, instructor-created prompt or official guidance; do not assume the optional essay appears in every administration.
  3. Plan before drafting. Write a one-sentence answer to the prompt, choose a few supporting reasons, and order them.
  4. Draft for one clear purpose. Keep each paragraph connected to the thesis and explain how the example supports the point.
  5. Review before time expires. Check that the response addresses the prompt and that the reasoning is easy to follow.
