Digital SAT Math Error Log: Separate Algebra, Reading and Calculator Errors (2027 Prep)

Reverse-glass folk-art comic in scarlet, jade, buttercream and plum. A dachshund librarian in a green scarf untangles ribbon trails leading to blank index-card trays under a red lamp, with books, plants, globe and a sleeping black cat nearby. Integrated handwriting reads SAT MATH and FIND THE STEP.

An error log becomes useful when it identifies the step you need to repair. 'Careless mistake' leaves too much unexplained: a changed sign, a misread request and an incorrectly grouped calculator entry call for different checks.

Start with the work. In the original teaching records below, we compare what was intended with the first visible departure, leaving the cause unresolved when the necessary steps are missing.

Record evidence before choosing a category

The College Board practice-confidence guidance recommends investigating what happened when confidence and an answer's correctness disagree, including a misread passage or a forgotten mathematical step. That gives review a purpose beyond collecting a wrong-answer count.

For permitted practice, write a short account of the step in your own words and retain a private reference to the material you are allowed to revisit. Keep question text out. An answer alone may reveal that something went wrong without showing how it happened, so your log needs room for an unresolved entry rather than requiring a confident label on every row.

The original first-divergence map (CSV) uses four invented records, with no actual learner history or exam questions. Its categories describe observed work, without proving whether the learner lacks a concept, rushed, felt anxious or simply copied something incorrectly.

Locate the sign change in the algebra

Our first record starts with the expression -4(2x – 3), followed by the observed written expansion -8x – 12. Distributing -4 to both terms gives -8x + 12 instead.

The second term diverged. At x = 0, the original expression and correct expansion both give 12, while the observed expansion gives -12. That check exposes the discrepancy without telling us why the writer made it. A useful next action is to revisit multiplication by a negative and explain the sign of each product before checking a new permitted practice example.

Do not turn one expansion into a claim about all the learner's algebra. Record the operation that failed and leave broader conclusions for evidence from later work.

Follow the request beyond the intermediate value

In the next teaching record, x = 6 has already been established and the requested quantity is 3x. The supplied final response is 6. Multiplying gives 18, so the response stops at the intermediate value rather than completing the stated request.

Read the requested quantity again. This record supports a requested-quantity mismatch, while giving us no reason to redo the earlier calculation merely because the final number is wrong. If the underlying x value were also incorrect, that would be another finding to record and check separately.

Compare the intended expression with the entry

The third record intends (18 + 6)/3, which equals 8, but supplies the entered expression 18 + 6/3, which equals 20. Division applies to 6 before addition in the second expression, so the missing grouping changes the computation.

Check the grouping. We independently calculated both values, without claiming to have observed a learner or a calculator session. The visible mismatch is between the intended formula and the supplied entry, making read-back of the numerator and denominator a sensible next action.

A calculator evaluating the entered expression correctly would still produce 20. The record therefore gives you a specific setup issue to review instead of treating every unexpected output as a malfunction or an algebra misconception.

Leave a missing explanation unresolved

Our fourth record supplies an expected comparison value of 12 and a final value of 8, with no intermediate steps, requested quantity or entered formula. The difference is visible. Its origin is not.

We cannot assign that row to algebra, reading or calculator entry on the supplied facts. Return to the permitted source and available work before proposing a repair, keeping the category unresolved if the evidence still does not identify the first departure.

More than one issue can occur in a longer solution. A log can retain additional observations after locating the first visible divergence, and a later check may require changing the original label. Keep that correction visible.

Four original teaching records. Categories describe visible evidence, not proven root causes or actual learner results.
Record / first departure Provisional review action
A: -8x – 12 versus -8x + 12 Revisit negative multiplication
B: 6 copied where 3x = 18 Check requested quantity
C: 18 + 6/3 versus (18 + 6)/3 Read grouping back
D: Final 8 versus supplied 12 Unresolved: obtain missing work

Use the next attempt to test the proposed repair

The blank error-evidence record (CSV) separates the observed step, comparison evidence, provisional category, proposed action and later result. Actual source details and learner outcomes are blank. Use your own permitted study references without copying confidential test material or private learner records into a shared file.

The College Board Khan Academy guidance describes a path from practice explanations to related lessons, alongside study at different difficulty levels. Choose the explanation or lesson that addresses the operation your review identified, then record what you can actually do afterward rather than treating a completed lesson as proof that the error is fixed.

For example, reviewing negative multiplication is a proposed action for the first record. The follow-up remains empty. A later correct expansion would provide evidence about that attempt, while one success alone would not establish a score increase or permanent mastery.
