South Dakota Chemistry Practice Tests
These full-length tests cover the chemistry your South Dakota course teaches, in the item styles used on the ACT.
Each test has 80 questions and a 100-minute timer you can switch off. Multiple choice, select-all, numerical fill-in, ordered-response and hot-spot questions are all included, and every question comes back with a worked explanation. Tests open right here on the page.
South Dakota Chemistry Study Tools
Two free tools that open right here on the page. Use them between practice tests to close the gaps the score report shows you.
Chemistry Flashcards
194 cards across all nine units, every term, formula and rule a high-school chemistry course expects you to recall on sight. Shuffle, flip, and star the ones you miss.
Chemistry Quick Review
64 cards of big ideas, must-know facts, easy-to-confuse pairs and exam traps. Built for the night before, when you need the whole course in one pass.
Both tools are the same for every state, because the chemistry is. What changes state to state is the exam wrapped around it. That is what the practice tests above handle.

South Dakota Chemistry Standards and Assessment
South Dakota does not give a separate chemistry exam. Chemistry content is assessed within the ACT (state-administered, grade 11) – includes an ACT Science section; it replaced the South Dakota Science Assessment (SDSA) at high school beginning spring 2026, alongside the other science disciplines.
| Standards | South Dakota State Academic Standards in Science (adopted May 2015, NGSS-based) |
|---|---|
| Course name | Chemistry |
| State exam | ACT (state-administered, grade 11) – includes an ACT Science section; it replaced the South Dakota Science Assessment (SDSA) at high school beginning spring 2026 |
| Chemistry-specific exam | No, chemistry is assessed inside a broader science test |
| Questions | 40 |
| Question types | multiple choice based on data sets, research summaries, and conflicting-viewpoint passages |
| Required to graduate | No |
What this means for you
South Dakota has no chemistry exam of any kind. SDDOE announced that starting in 2025-26 (first administration spring 2026) the ACT replaces the state’s grade-11 assessments, and ACT Science scores are used for state science proficiency; SDSA science continues only at grades 5 and 8. The item count of 40 is the ACT Science section’s published length; the section time could not be verified from an official state or ACT source (a secondary source gives 35 minutes for the improved ACT while Utah’s USBE lists 40 minutes), so time_limit is null. Calculator policy for ACT Science was not verified from an official source.
South Dakota Chemistry FAQ
Does South Dakota have a state chemistry exam?
Not a chemistry-only one. Chemistry content is assessed inside a broader science measure: ACT (state-administered, grade 11) – includes an ACT Science section; it replaced the South Dakota Science Assessment (SDSA) at high school beginning spring 2026.
What is on these practice tests?
Each test has 80 questions drawn from the full high-school chemistry course, measurement and significant figures, atomic structure and periodic trends, bonding and molecular shape, the mole and stoichiometry, reactions and solutions, thermochemistry, kinetics and equilibrium, gases, acids and bases, electrochemistry, and lab practice. Question types include multiple choice, select-all, numerical fill-in, ordered response and hot spot.
How long does a test take?
About 100 minutes if you use the timer. You can also take it untimed, which is the better choice the first time. You learn more from working a problem through than from running out of clock.
Are the 2 tests different from each other?
Yes. No question is shared between them, so a second test is a real second measurement rather than a memory check.
Do I need an account?
No. Every test, the flashcards and the quick review are free and open, with no login and nothing to install. They open in a window on this page, your answers stay put while it is open, and your score and explanations appear the moment you submit.
