ASVAB for Beginners

Use this instant downloadable PDF to figure out what to study before you commit to a whole practice test. Start with the short diagnostic. If reading questions went well but you ran out of time on rate problems, begin with Arithmetic Reasoning and save the reading lessons for another day.

  • 428 PDF pages including the front and back covers.
  • 50 diagnostic questions with an answer sheet and a study plan.
  • 472 worked questions that show the decisions behind the answers.
  • 340 end-of-subtest questions with explanations in the back.

What you get inside

The lessons take up one skill at a time. You can read about a lever and then see how the location of its pivot affects the effort needed to move a load. In a reading lesson, you can compare a plausible answer with the line that actually supports the author’s point. The worked questions let you see those decisions before making them on your own.

  • A starting point. Take the diagnostic and use the results to choose the subjects that deserve the next study session.
  • Practice by subject. Work through the end-of-subtest questions in small groups, or complete an entire section when you have time.
  • Full-length practice. The book includes two full-length forms, one in CAT format and one in paper-and-pencil format. It also links to 50 additional online forms. Computer-format practice uses fixed questions.
  • Help after you score. The back of the book includes answers and explanations, a quick formula and fact sheet, and a glossary.

How to use the guide

Try one worked question with the solution covered. Show your calculation or trace the part of the figure that led you to your answer. Then compare the two approaches. If you got the right letter by guessing, flag it for a second attempt anyway. That small habit makes the next study session easier to plan.

When you’re ready to work against the clock, use one of the full-length forms. Afterward, choose a missed question you came close to solving. Find the first point where your work differs from the explanation, and use that step to choose what to practice next.

Which subjects are covered?

General Science covers topics from cells and ecosystems to energy, weather, and space. Arithmetic Reasoning teaches you to turn a situation into a calculation. Mathematics Knowledge includes algebra, geometry, and data. In Word Knowledge, you work with definitions and context. Paragraph Comprehension asks you to find the evidence that supports an answer.

The technical lessons cover Electronics Information, Auto Information, Shop Information, and Mechanical Comprehension. Assembling Objects gives you practice tracking edges and marked points as shapes turn and fit together.

Why choose the instant PDF?

On a screen. Open the PDF on a computer or tablet to zoom in on diagrams and return to lessons through the linked contents. You can keep your study notes in a separate notebook or a PDF app that supports annotations.

On paper. Print the answer sheet, a practice section, or the formula pages you want beside you. The interior is laid out for US letter paper.

Is this the right book for you?

A good fit. Choose it if you are returning to study, learning the technical subjects for the first time, or looking for a guide you can use with a tutor.

Consider your needs. If you already know the fundamentals and only want a live adaptive test or an official score report, this study guide serves a different purpose. It is an independent preparation resource with original practice material.

Questions before you start

What arrives after checkout? A digital PDF for download. This listing is for the digital edition.

Can I use the book on my own? Yes. Start with the diagnostic and read the worked solutions as you go. Tutors can use the same pages to compare approaches with a learner.

Where are the answers? Worked examples include their solutions in the lessons. Explanations for independent practice and the full-length forms appear in the back matter.

Do I need to finish a full form first? No. Use the diagnostic to choose one topic, then come back to a full form when you want to check your pacing.

Look through the sample pages and find a lesson that fits your next study session.
