What to review for Reading Comprehension

The OAT Reading Comprehension Test presents three passages on scientific topics, with 50 items in 60 minutes. The official guide says prior knowledge of the science is not required; the task is to understand and analyze information in the passage.

Passage structure

Build a quick map

Track the main claim, paragraph roles, contrasts, examples, and how the explanation develops.

Evidence locating

Return to the text

For detail questions, locate the relevant passage language and distinguish a supported answer from a plausible outside fact.

Inference and relationships

Connect ideas carefully

Identify what follows from the passage, how a result relates to a claim, and where a conclusion would go beyond the evidence.

Scientific language

Use context

Read technical terms in the sentence and paragraph where they appear. The exam measures comprehension of the passage, not prior mastery of its topic.

Pacing across three passages

Make a repeatable route

Practice a consistent passage-and-question workflow and monitor time so one difficult item does not absorb the section.

Use the official content outline as the boundary for review. The section counts and times here come from the 2026 OAT Candidate Guide and User Guide; verify the current guide before your test date.

A practical study route

Turn the outline into focused practice

  1. Practice one passage untimed. Map the structure and record the line or paragraph that supports each answer.
  2. Label question types. Separate main idea, detail, inference, vocabulary-in-context, and passage-relationship questions.
  3. Build an evidence habit. Before choosing, identify what the passage states and what the answer adds.
  4. Add timed sets gradually. Use shorter timed sessions, then monitor pacing across all three passages.
  5. Review wrong answers. Explain why the selected answer is unsupported and what specific evidence makes the best answer stronger.

Official information and study tools

Choose reliable Reading Comprehension resources

Start with official specifications and official practice modules. Commercial resources can supplement review; the OAT Program advises candidates to confirm outside materials reflect current test content.

The OAT Program states that it does not endorse preparation courses. Linked commercial resources are independent study aids.
