Prepare for the Optometry Admission Test with a clear view of its four sections, current timing, scoring, and a study route that connects science review with reading and quantitative practice.

Meet the test

Know the OAT before you start.

The Optometry Admission Test is used by optometry education programs to assess applicants’ academic preparation. It has four multiple-choice sections and combines foundational science with reading and problem solving.

230items in the published section counts
4 hr 5 mintimed test sections
5 hr 5 minfull administration schedule
200–400scale scores, reported in 10-point increments
No fixed cutoffeach optometry program sets its own criteria

The full schedule includes an optional 15-minute tutorial, a 30-minute scheduled break, and an optional 15-minute post-test survey. The test sections themselves total 245 minutes. Check the current candidate guide for scheduling, fees, and application rules.

Four timed sections

Map the OAT section by section

Use the official item counts and section times to plan focused practice. The Natural Sciences section combines three subjects; the other sections assess distinct kinds of reading and problem solving.

Section item counts and times come from the 2026 OAT Candidate Guide. Some experimental items may be unscored and are not identified during the test.

Plan your preparation

Build the right foundation before test day.

The official guide says successful candidates typically complete at least one year of college study including biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry; most candidates have two or more years. Optometry schools set their own admissions criteria, so check each program’s requirements too.

Check timing with your programs

Ask target optometry schools when they want scores and which admissions cycle you plan to enter. Leave room for score reporting and application deadlines.

Four routes into OAT review

Start with a diagnostic, sort missed questions by section and skill, then return to timed work as accuracy improves.

1 · Diagnose the full mix

Try official practice modules or a carefully timed set in each section. Record whether each miss came from a content gap, a setup error, a rushed decision, or a misread.

2 · Rotate the science subjects

Move among biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. Keep a short recall sheet for principles and equations, then use practice problems to expose gaps.

3 · Train reading and pacing

Practice passage mapping and evidence-based answers in Reading Comprehension. Use timed sets to learn when to move on and return.

4 · Review every solution

For Physics and Quantitative Reasoning, show the setup, check units, and compare your method with a worked explanation before repeating similar items.

A four-week route

Plan your OAT review

Adjust the pace to your background and exam date. Keep a balanced schedule, use active recall, and protect time for mixed timed practice.

Week 1 · Baseline and science map

Take a diagnostic set, review Biology and General Chemistry foundations, and identify recurring skill gaps across all four sections.

Week 2 · Chemistry and reading

Rotate General and Organic Chemistry with passage practice. The June 2026 Organic Chemistry specification update is in effect; use the implemented outline and the candidate guide for your test date.

Week 3 · Physics and quantitative reasoning

Review equations, units, algebra, graphs, and data problems. Use timed sets and write down why a wrong option looked tempting.

Week 4 · Mixed practice and repair

Use full-section or official practice modules, review every explanation, and spend the final sessions repairing the gaps that cost the most time or accuracy.

Quick answers

OAT questions, answered

How many questions are on the OAT?

The 2026 Candidate Guide lists 230 items across four sections: 100 Natural Sciences, 50 Reading Comprehension, 40 Physics, and 40 Quantitative Reasoning.

How long does the OAT take?

The four timed sections total 4 hours and 5 minutes. The full administration schedule is 5 hours and 5 minutes when it includes the optional tutorial, scheduled break, and post-test survey.

What is a passing score on the OAT?

There is no single official passing score. OAT scale scores range from 200 to 400 in 10-point increments, and each optometry program decides how to use applicants’ scores.

Does the OAT have an Organic Chemistry update?

The Department of Testing Services’ September 23, 2026 bulletin confirms that updated Organic Chemistry specifications were implemented in June 2026. The OAT homepage and 2026 Candidate Guide retain earlier anticipated wording, so use the implemented outline and check the guide that applies to your test date. ADA examination update bulletin (updated September 23, 2026).

How much does the OAT cost?

Fees change by testing period. The 2026 guide’s $520 examination fee covered July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026; check the official OAT site for the fee that applies to your application date.

Where can I take the OAT?

The exam is offered year-round at Prometric test centers in the United States, its territories, and select Canadian locations. Verify current test locations and appointment availability when scheduling.

How should I start studying?

Take a diagnostic set in each section, log misses by skill, and alternate focused review with timed practice. Keep checking the official guide when specifications or policies may have changed.
