Partial Fraction Decomposition Calculator (Free)
Use this free partial fraction decomposition calculator to split a proper rational expression with distinct linear factors into a sum of simple fractions. It uses the cover-up method and shows each coefficient step by step.
What it does
For a proper fraction over distinct linear factors, each numerator constant Aᵢ is found by evaluating the numerator at the matching root and dividing by the product of the differences of the other roots.
How to use it
- Choose 2 or 3 distinct linear factors.
- Enter the numerator coefficients and the roots.
- Press Decompose for the simple fractions and the steps.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cover-up method?
A shortcut: to find the constant over (x − rᵢ), substitute x = rᵢ into the rest of the expression.
Does it handle repeated or quadratic factors?
This version handles distinct linear factors. Repeated and irreducible quadratic factors are not yet supported.
What does proper fraction mean?
The numerator’s degree must be lower than the denominator’s (fewer than the number of factors).
