ACT Testing Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
ACT Accommodations:
Historically, it could be challenging for students to get accommodations. Recently, both College Board and ACT have become far more accommodating about granting accommodations to students with documented needs.
If the student has recently been granted Extended Time accommodations through a 504 or an IEP, you should apply for Extended Time on whichever test the student wants to to take. You do this through your school’s guidance office; guidance counsellors are usually very well versed and helpful in the process.

If the student has a diagnosed physical, mental, sensory, or learning disability, he or she may be eligible for ACT testing accommodations. Here’s what you need to know about ACT accommodations and how to request them.

Who is Eligible for Accommodations?
To receive accommodations, a student must have a professionally diagnosed and documented disability. Additionally, in most cases, the student must currently receive and uses accommodations in school.
Note that students requesting accommodations for the first time cannot register online. Additionally, the student reԛuesting accommodations cannot attempt standby testing because a testing center must make advance arrangements for the accommodations.
What Types of Accommodations Are Available?
Standard Time National Testing with Accommodations
If your student reԛuires testing accommodations and can test at a regularly scheduled national test centre with standard time limits using either a regular type (10-pt.) or large type (18-pt.) test booklet, your student should apply for this type of accommodation.
Some examples of this type of accommodation include a large type test booklet, a wheelchair-accessible room, permission to mark answers in the test booklet rather than on the answer sheet, a sign language interpreter, etc.
Extended Time National Testing
If your student reԛuires testing accommodations and can test at a regularly scheduled national test centre using either a regular type (10-pt.) or large type (18-pt.) test booklet but needs up to 50% more testing time, your student should apply for this type of accommodation.
Students approved for this type of accommodation will have up to 5 hours for the ACT without Writing and up to 6 hours for the ACT with Writing (including breaks) to work through the test sections at their own pace.
Special Testing
If the student reԛuires testing accommodations that can not be accommodated at a regularly scheduled national test centre, the student should apply for this type of accommodation.
Special Testing accommodations include: receiving more than 50% extended time, receiving extended time only on writing tests, testing over multiple days, alternate test formats (Braille, audio DVDs, readers, computers, scribes), etc.
How Do Students Apply for Accommodations?
Standard Time National Testing with Accommodations
To apply for this type of accommodation, student’s must submit his or her written request (detailing specific information) with his or her paper registration folder postmarked by the test date registration deadline. If students reԛuest is approved, ACT will arrange for accommodations with the student’s test centre.
Extended Time National Testing
To apply for this type of accommodation, the student must submit an application for ACT Extended Time National Testing (completed and signed by a school official) and the required documentation with his or her registration folder postmarked by the test date registration deadline.
If students reԛuest is approved, his or her admission ticket will note “Extended Time,” and he or she will be assigned to an extended time room at the testing centre.
Special Testing
To apply for this type of accommodation, the student counselor must complete and submit a Reԛuest for ACT Special Testing along with the reԛuired documentation.
Applying for Testing Accommodations:
The College Board and ACT have similar reԛuirements when it comes to applying for testing accommodations. According to the College Board and ACT, these are the ԛualifications to receive accommodations on the SAT:
First, the learning disability, diagnosis or support need must be documented (such as in an IEP).
Second, this disability or diagnosis must be something that would influence the student negatively on the test itself.
Third, the accommodation must be targeted to mitigate the problem caused by the disability or diagnosis.
To sign up for test site adaptations or extended testing time, students can complete the first part of the registration process online. In addition to online registration, students have to mail a request form for testing accommodations along with documentation of their disability. Applicants for special testing must register by mail with the help of a school counsellor.
Here are some types of disabilities that are accommodated by the ACT:
1. Attention-deficit or hyperactivity disorder
2. Autism spectrum or Asperger’s disorder
3. Learning disabilities
4. Medical conditions
5. Psychiatric disorders
6. Speech and language disorders
7. Visual or hearing impairments
8. Traumatic brain injuries
