An exponent tells how many times to use a base as a factor.

In 5^3, the exponent 3 means 5 x 5 x 5.

Examples

2^4 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 16
10^3 = 1000
x^2 means x times x

Common mistake

Do not multiply the base by the exponent. 3^4 is 81, not 12.
