Keep the total while changing the order of two groups
Does changing the group order change the total?
Place four red counters and two blue counters on a mat. Count the whole set, then describe it as four red and two blue. Move the blue group to the left without adding or removing a counter. Describe the rearranged set as two blue and four red. Compare 4 + 2 and 2 + 4 using the objects rather than only recite an addition fact.
| First group | Second group | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 4 red | 2 blue | 6 |
| 2 blue | 4 red | 6 |
Follow the reasoning
Both arrangements contain the same six counters. Four plus two and two plus four describe the groups in a different order while keeping their combined quantity. Ask the child to show the four-counter group and the two-counter group in each arrangement, then explain that none were added or removed. Saying “the answer is six” is useful, but identifying what stays the same makes the explanation stronger. The Idaho requirement does not ask students to use the formal property name.
Check the explanation
Changing the order of addends is different from replacing addition with subtraction. The counter model does not show that 4 − 2 and 2 − 4 have the same result. Keep this activity focused on combining the two groups. Also distinguish moving counters from changing a group’s size: if another blue counter is added, the set no longer represents the original pair. A changed picture can keep the quantity, but a changed quantity requires a new explanation.
Choose the next model
Try five yellow counters and three green counters. Show 5 + 3 and 3 + 5, count the same eight objects, and explain the unchanged total. Then ask the child to draw both group orders and match each drawing to its equation. Read any word directions aloud when needed; decoding written problems is not the purpose of this addition activity. Extend the comparison with other taught sums rather than infer that one correct model establishes every part of the operations-and-algebraic-thinking domain.

Grade 1 is below Idaho’s ISAT mathematics testing range, which begins in Grade 3. Use classroom observations, models, and explanations to plan early learning. Read Idaho’s assessment overview.
Keep one example of the student’s reasoning with the practice result. Choose a smaller model, a related question, or a new context according to the difficulty revealed in the worked activity.

Idaho Grade 1 math: useful study questions
Does the child need the name commutative property?
No. Idaho’s selected Grade 1 requirement says students need not use formal property terms. Show the two groups in either order and explain why their combined total stays the same.
Is Grade 1 included in Idaho ISAT math testing?
Idaho lists ISAT mathematics in Grades 3–8 and 11 and provides an alternate-assessment pathway for eligible students. Grade 1 practice supports early learning and should not be presented as a Grade 1 state summative test.
