Words for Thinking, Learning, and Communication
A speaker implies. A listener infers. Those two verbs describe opposite ends of the same exchange, and mixing them up is one of the most common errors in careful English — common enough that editors have been complaining about it for a century.
The larger point is that words about thinking and communicating are not a single fuzzy category called “words about the mind.” Each one names a specific move: noticing something, guessing at it, reasoning from evidence, stating it confidently, showing it, supporting it, or proving it false. Treating them as interchangeable is what makes them hard.
Words for thinking, learning, and communication name distinct mental and verbal moves. They differ by who performs the move (a speaker, a listener, an observer, or a reasoner), by how much certainty the move carries, and by whether the word describes evidence, a claim, or a conclusion drawn from evidence.
Who owns the mental move?
Before anything else, find the person. A source supplies a suggestion; a receiver draws a conclusion. When an engineer calls a repair “only a temporary measure,” the engineer implies that more work is coming. The listener who hears it and expects a second visit infers it. Both words describe the same unspoken idea, but from opposite sides of the room.
The same test settles other pairs. Perceive belongs to whoever became aware of something. Assert belongs to whoever made the claim. Corroborate belongs to the evidence, not the person. Once you know whose action the sentence describes, several answer choices usually stop being possible.
How certain is the sentence, really?
Statements about the world sit at different heights on an evidence ladder. Reading the height correctly is often the whole question:

Consider: “A receipt corroborated the account without proving every detail.” The sentence explicitly stops short of proof, which rules out any answer meaning “prove completely.” It also adds new support, which rules out “repeat.” Corroborate means support with additional evidence, and the sentence has drawn the line for you.
Watch the verbs that carry two senses
Demonstrate can mean show a procedure or prove a claim with evidence. When an instructor uses a model in front of a class, the instructional sense is active: show. When a study demonstrates that a treatment works, the evidential sense is active: prove. Nothing about the word tells you which; the surrounding sentence does.
Derive behaves the same way. You can derive a chemical from a plant (obtain from a source) or derive a conclusion from known principles (reason your way to it). And articulate is a verb meaning express clearly in words — it says nothing about volume or length. A three-sentence answer can be more articulate than a three-minute one.
Three worked examples
From the wet pavement, Lee could infer that it had rained. Lee is the receiver, drawing a conclusion from a physical clue. That eliminates imply, which belongs to a source. It also eliminates “observe directly,” because Lee did not see the rain, only its trace. And it eliminates “guess,” because there is evidence. The answer is conclude from evidence.
The two chemicals produced distinct odors that no tester confused. Distinct means clearly different. “Strong” and “unpleasant” describe the odors but answer a different question. “Separate in location” reads the word as a matter of geography. The clause “that no tester confused” points at distinguishability, not intensity.
Before signing, Mina scrutinized every condition in the contract. Scrutinize means examine very closely. “Glance at” is the opposite in degree, “summarize” is a different action entirely, and “approve” is a decision rather than an examination. The word “every” is the clue that the reading was exhaustive.
A routine for thinking and communication words
- Identify who holds the information: the speaker, the listener, the observer, or the reasoner.
- Name the move — notice, suggest, state, explain, show, support, admit, or disprove.
- Place it on the evidence ladder. Does the sentence claim a guess, a conclusion, support, confirmation, or proof?
- If the verb has more than one accepted sense, ask which one the surrounding nouns turn on.
- Reject any choice that raises or lowers the certainty the sentence actually claims.

- After reading the manual twice, Dario finally began to comprehend the startup sequence.
- In dim light the technician could barely discern the crack in the weld.
- The committee spent two months working to formulate a policy that covered every branch.
- Without a witness, the investigator could only speculate about the cause.
- The instructor used a model to demonstrate the release procedure.
- The union representative articulated the safety concern in three clear sentences.
Answers
- Understand. Comprehend is plain understanding. “Memorize” and “approve” describe different acts, and “read” is what he was already doing.
- Detect or recognize. Discern is perception at the edge of what is possible. “Repair” is an action, and “measure” requires a tool. “Barely” tells you the verb is about noticing.
- Develop systematically. Formulate is construction over time. “Announce” is publication, which happens after. Two months of work is the evidence for building rather than declaring.
- Form ideas without firm evidence. “Without a witness” removes the evidence, so any answer involving proof or conclusion from evidence is too strong.
- Show. A physical model activates the instructional sense. Demonstrate can mean prove, but there is no claim under test here, only a procedure being displayed.
- Expressed clearly in words. Articulate concerns clarity. “Spoke loudly” reads it as volume and “repeated” reads it as duplication; “three clear sentences” points straight at clarity.
