What do Alaska 2nd graders learn in ELA?

In 2nd grade, Alaska English language arts centers on reading fluency, finding key details, word parts, and writing short opinion and informative pieces. This page pairs each skill with short lessons.

Standards source: Alaska Standards and Instruction, Alaska Department of Education and Early Development.

Use this Alaska Grade 2 English page for classroom instruction, after-school support, summer refreshers, and assessment preparation. The explanations are written for planning and learning support, not copied from official standards language.

Follow a character's response and choose precise verbs

Second-grade reading becomes more useful when students explain a response to a problem and pay attention to the author's words. Begin with a short narrative. Ask what caused the action, then compare two verbs that would make the action feel different. A student can understand the plot yet still need help with vocabulary.

A worked Grade 2 reading and writing example

These original classroom examples model reasoning. They are fictional learning material, separate from official assessment questions.

In an invented Alaska classroom, Nora brought a book for the class exchange. She saw that its cover had torn in her bag. Instead of hiding it, she hurried to her teacher, explained what had happened, and asked for tape. Later she carried the repaired book carefully to the exchange table.

Build the explanation

The torn cover is the problem. Nora responds by asking for help and repairing the book, so the exchange can continue. The verb hurried suggests she moved quickly. Replacing it with wandered would make her seem less focused on solving the problem. A clear explanation connects the event, the response, and the effect of the word choice.

Diagnose the next learning need

A response such as 'Nora is good' needs a supporting action. A response that says hurried means walked misses the speed implied by the verb. Act out walked, hurried, and wandered, then choose the word that fits this scene.

Make the next practice session count

  1. Mark the problem and the action taken to solve it.
  2. Explain the action with a because sentence.
  3. Replace one verb, reread, and describe how the scene changes.

Use a teacher-selected story with a different problem. Keep the character response separate from a guess about what the student would do personally.
