Grade 1 English: choose a target and practice it

Start with a selected Alabama learning target, read the worked example, and choose a short study activity. Follow your teacher’s assignment and use the state document for the full requirement.

Alabama Grade 1 English: Hear the sounds, read the words, tell the story

First-grade English begins with being able to hear and work with sounds, connect those sounds to letters, and understand a short text. In Alabama’s course of study, these skills belong within Literacy Foundations. A child who understands a story read aloud may still need help decoding its words; give those two skills separate attention.

Alabama’s first-grade section emphasizes Literacy Foundations, including oral language, word reading, comprehension, and writing. The Grade 1 section of the 2021 Alabama Course of Study is the starting point for the references here. Alabama’s standards directory lists the course as effective from the 2022–2023 school year.

These three references help connect a classroom assignment with a study activity. The labels below summarize a focus; the linked state pages contain the complete requirements and subparts. This is a selected guide, not the complete Grade 1 course of study. Alabama’s numbered standards should not be replaced by an RL, RI, or W Common Core code.

A worked Grade 1 learning example

The following short example was written for this guide. Use it to model an explanation, then try the same skill with a teacher-selected text.

Mia lost her red hat. She looked under the bed. Her dog had the hat beside his bowl. Mia picked it up and smiled.

How to reason through it

Read the passage together. A simple retelling is: Mia lost her hat, looked for it, and found it beside the dog’s bowl. That response keeps the problem and the order of events. Then model the sentence ‘Mia found her hat.’ Point out the capital M, the space between each word, and the period.

What to notice in the response

If the child retells accurately when you read aloud but struggles to read the passage, work on the sound–letter patterns already taught in class. If the words are read accurately but the retelling is muddled, use three drawings to organize the beginning, middle, and end.

A manageable Grade 1 study routine

  1. Read a short decodable text chosen by the teacher; revisit one taught spelling pattern.
  2. Retell with three pictures, then label who did what.
  3. Dictate or write one complete sentence; reread it together for meaning.

Keep a short note about the spelling pattern used and whether the child read independently or with support. Progress is easier to see when you repeat the skill with a new text rather than memorize one passage.

Alabama Grade 1 English questions

Which curriculum source should I use?

Use the Alabama Academic Standards directory and its linked 2021 English Language Arts course of study. The state English Language Arts page also provides implementation information. School pacing guides determine when a class works on a particular requirement.

How does Grade 1 connect to ACAP?

Alabama’s ACAP Summative covers Grades 2–8, so it is not a Grade 1 assessment. Use this page for classroom learning and reading support rather than timed ACAP preparation. Check the state’s ACAP guidance.

Is this the full official curriculum?

No. It is an independently published guide with selected state references, original worked examples, and suggested study steps. It does not reproduce every standard, establish an official score, or replace teacher guidance.

Sources checked October 5, 2026: Alabama State Department of Education, Academic Standards directory; 2021 Course of Study: English Language Arts; English Language Arts implementation page; ACAP Summative/Alternate page. Selected target numbers and PDF locations were checked against the state document. A full curriculum or practice-resource alignment is not claimed.
