Meet the exam

What the Series 63 exam measures

NASAA develops the Series 63, and FINRA administers it. The exam evaluates knowledge of state securities regulation, the Uniform Securities Act of 1956 as amended by NASAA, and rules against dishonest or unethical practices. Passing does not itself grant a state license or permission to transact business.

Pick a direction

Choose a study route that fits your gaps

Use missed and guessed questions as signals. Name the rule or definition, identify the parties and facts, then explain why the rule changes the result.

1 · Map your baselineTake a short diagnostic and sort misses into the eight NASAA sections.
2 · Build the legal frameReview definitions, registration triggers, exemptions, and state Administrator authority.
3 · Apply the rulePractice customer agreements, communications, disclosures, and case facts.
4 · Protect the customerReview custody, discretion, conflicts, compensation, and prohibited practices.

Reserve your longest practice blocks for Ethical Practices and Customer Communications, then revisit the smaller registration sections throughout the week.

A routine you can adapt

A four-week Series 63 study plan

Adjust the pace to your background and appointment date. Keep an error log that records the rule, the fact that mattered, and the reason your first answer missed it.

Week 1 · Definitions and registration

Read sections I–IV. Compare investment advisers, representatives, broker-dealers, and agents; practice when registration is required or excluded.

Week 2 · Securities and administration

Study sections V–VI. Review issuer and security definitions, exemptions, state registration, Administrator authority, and remedies.

Week 3 · Communications

Study section VII. Work through required disclosures, customer agreements, correspondence, advertising, websites, social media, and digital messages.

Week 4 · Ethics and mixed review

Give section VIII the largest block. Review compensation, customer funds and securities, discretion, conflicts, and prohibited conduct, then complete timed mixed practice.

Use current authorized materials. NASAA says third-party providers do not have access to secure exam items.
