CURRENT FINRA EXAM INFORMATION

How the Series 6 exam is structured

50 scored questions

The exam uses four-choice multiple-choice items. FINRA also includes five unidentified pretest items that do not count toward your score, for 55 total items.

90 minutes

The official outline gives candidates one hour and 30 minutes. A brief tutorial is provided before the computer-delivered exam.

Answer every item

The outline says there is no penalty for guessing. Pretest items are mixed through the exam and cannot be identified, so treat each item as scored.

FINRA uses statistical equating so different exam versions are evaluated against a common passing standard. Follow the current exam appointment and test-center instructions supplied through your firm.

QUALIFICATION EXAM · FIRM SPONSORSHIP REQUIRED

Understand the Series 6 and SIE registration path

Start with a FINRA member firm

A FINRA member firm must sponsor you and submit the appropriate registration request before you can take the Series 6 qualification exam.

Complete the SIE co-requisite

FINRA requires both the Series 6 exam and the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam for this registration category. The SIE can be taken before employment; the Series 6 is firm-sponsored.

Registration is role-limited

Series 6 registration covers a defined set of investment-company and variable-contract products. It does not authorize every securities activity. Confirm scope with FINRA and your firm.

Passing the exam alone does not grant registration or permission to conduct securities business. Your firm and FINRA manage the registration process and applicable requirements.

Plan review across the four Series 6 functions

Allocate practice according to FINRA’s item weights. Function 3 is half the scored exam, so build product knowledge and recommendation judgment while maintaining steady review across the other three functions.

Job function Exam weight Scored items Study focus
1. Seeks business for the broker-dealer 24% 12 Customer communication, marketing approvals, public communications, product descriptions, prospectuses, and permitted offerings.
2. Opens accounts after evaluating customer information 16% 8 Account types and registrations, customer identification, KYC, privacy, investment profiles, authorizations, supervisory approval, and suspicious activity escalation.
3. Provides investment information, recommendations, transfers, and records 50% 25 Investment products and risks, customer-specific recommendations, disclosures, costs and tax considerations, transfers, confirmations, statements, and records.
4. Obtains instructions and processes transactions 10% 5 Quotes, order instructions, trade execution, best execution, confirmations, settlement, errors, complaints, and reporting.

The job-function weights come from FINRA’s Series 6 Content Outline. They describe the scored exam distribution, not the number of practice questions to memorize.

PICK A DIRECTION

Choose a study route that fits your gaps

Use missed and guessed questions as signals. Record the job function, relevant customer or transaction facts, the rule or product concept involved, and why the best action fits the facts.

Map your baseline

Take a short diagnostic and sort results into FINRA’s four functions.

Build product fluency

Compare product purpose, risks, liquidity, costs, tax features, and required disclosures.

Apply customer facts

Practice matching recommendations to objectives, time horizon, liquidity needs, and risk tolerance.

Close the transaction

Review instructions, trade processing, confirmations, settlement, records, and escalation steps.

Give Function 3 the largest review block because it represents 50% of scored items; revisit Functions 1, 2, and 4 each week.

A ROUTINE YOU CAN ADAPT

A four-week Series 6 study plan

Use the schedule as a starting point and adjust it to your firm’s training program. Keep a short error log and return to difficult items after a delay.

Week 1 · Baseline and business seeking

Read the FINRA outline, take a diagnostic, and review communications, advertising approvals, prospectuses, and permitted offerings.

Week 2 · Accounts and customer profiles

Study account registration, customer identification, KYC, privacy, investment objectives, authorizations, and supervisory review.

Week 3 · Products and recommendations

Compare investment company and variable contract products, risks, costs, disclosures, suitability, transfers, statements, and records.

Week 4 · Transactions and mixed review

Review quotes, order instructions, execution, settlement, confirmations, errors, and complaints. Finish with mixed timed practice and revisit missed items.

Use authorized preparation materials. Do not copy, share, or seek secure FINRA exam questions.
