AMT RMA Study Center & Exam Guide
Get oriented to the American Medical Technologists Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) exam, see how its three work areas are weighted, and choose a practical next step for your review. The guide follows AMT’s 2026 competencies and links to current official and independent study resources.
MEET THE EXAM
Know what the RMA measures
AMT’s Registered Medical Assistant certification exam measures knowledge across general, administrative, and clinical medical assisting. Use AMT’s current competencies as your map: they show the broad job areas and their relative weight so you can plan your study time deliberately.
Keep the credential straight. The AMT RMA is a separate certification from the NHA CCMA and other medical-assistant credentials. Their eligibility rules and exam blueprints are not interchangeable.
CURRENT AMT EXAM INFORMATION
How the AMT RMA exam works
AMT describes its certification exams as multiple-choice assessments. The Candidate Handbook gives a general range across AMT exams; the current RMA outline separately organizes 210 items into three work areas. AMT does not publish an RMA-specific count of unscored pilot items, so the 210-item outline should not be read as a scored-item total.
Eligibility, application, and scheduling
AMT lists five possible eligibility routes: education, competency or work-based learning, work experience, military service, and instructor status. Each route has its own training, work-hour, and documentation requirements. Check AMT’s eligibility page for the route that fits you before applying. AMT lists a $150 application fee that includes the exam and first annual fee; confirm current pricing when you apply. Exams are offered through Pearson VUE and at some school locations.
Scoring detail: AMT reports a scaled score from 0 to 100, with 70 required to pass. A scaled score is not the number or percentage of questions answered correctly. The handbook says an exam may include unscored pilot items but does not give an RMA-specific count.
YOUR CONTENT MAP · AMT 2026 OUTLINE
The three RMA work areas
The item counts and weights below follow AMT’s 2026 RMA Examination Competencies and Specifications. Clinical Medical Assisting carries the largest share of the blueprint, but all three areas matter. Use the complete AMT outline for its full competency details.
Area 1 · General
General Medical Assisting
65 · 31%
Build a sound base in health science, medical language, and the professional responsibilities that shape patient care.
- Body systems, common disease concepts, wellness, and nutrition
- Medical terminology and communication with patients and colleagues
- Medical law, ethics, confidentiality, HIPAA, and scope of practice
Area 2 · Administrative
Administrative Medical Assisting
30 · 14%
Review the daily office processes that keep patient information, appointments, and billing organized.
- Insurance, explanations of benefits, coding, and claims
- Scheduling, referrals, authorizations, and professional correspondence
- Health records, office applications, privacy, supplies, and workplace safety
Area 3 · Clinical
Clinical Medical Assisting
115 · 55%
Study safe clinical procedures, routine measurements, diagnostic support, and timely responses to urgent needs.
- Infection prevention, instruments, specimens, and laboratory procedures
- Vital signs, physical examinations, ECG, and minor surgical procedures
- Pharmacology, therapeutic modalities, first aid, and emergencies
Percentages are rounded to whole numbers from AMT’s listed counts: 65 of 210, 30 of 210, and 115 of 210. These are blueprint weights, not a promise about the exact mix of a future form.
PICK A DIRECTION
Choose your RMA study route
Start with the step that matches what you need today. Use a practice resource to identify gaps, then return to the matching work area and review the reasoning behind any missed or guessed answer.
Learn the exam first
Read the AMT outline and candidate guidance. Check your eligibility route, format, scoring, and application steps before setting a test date.
Build a content base
Work through one blueprint area at a time. Make clinical procedures and foundational terminology active recall topics, and keep office workflows in short review sessions.
Check your readiness
Use an authorized practice set, review every explanation, and note the work area behind each miss. Retest weak skills with fresh material.
Label the work area
Record whether a missed item relates to general, administrative, or clinical medical assisting.
Explain the idea
Write why the supported answer fits the question and which detail rules out a tempting alternative.
Review the source
Return to the relevant outline section or lesson rather than memorizing a single answer.
Check again later
Use a new question after a short delay to see whether you can apply the idea without a cue.
Use practice as feedback. Third-party practice scores do not predict or replace the official AMT scaled score. Follow AMT’s rules and use authorized materials; do not seek or share recalled exam questions.
A ROUTINE YOU CAN ADAPT
A four-week RMA study plan
Adjust the sessions to your schedule and prior experience. The plan gives each blueprint area a place while reserving extra practice for the larger clinical section.
Week 1 · Set your baseline
Read the AMT outline, identify your eligibility route, and try an authorized diagnostic practice resource. Record confidence and gaps by work area.
Week 2 · Strengthen clinical skills
Focus on infection control, measurements, specimens, ECG, procedures, and pharmacology. Practice explaining safe steps and their purpose.
Week 3 · Rotate all areas
Mix clinical review with general concepts and administrative workflows. Use flashcards for recall, then explain ideas in your own words.
Week 4 · Rehearse and reset
Complete a timed practice session, review misses and guesses, and revisit the weakest area. Confirm your appointment, identification, and AMT testing instructions.
Let the blueprint guide the time. Clinical skills make up 55% of the outline, but a short, regular review of the other areas can prevent easy gaps from lingering.

QUICK ANSWERS
AMT RMA questions, answered
How many items are on the AMT RMA outline?
AMT’s 2026 RMA competencies and specifications list 210 items across general, administrative, and clinical medical assisting. The Candidate Handbook says exams may include unscored pilot items, but it does not specify an RMA pilot-item count. Do not treat all 210 as confirmed scored items.
How long is the RMA exam?
AMT lists a two-hour time limit for the Medical Assistant exam. Confirm the instructions for your scheduled exam before test day.
What score do I need to pass?
AMT requires a scaled score of 70 on a 0–100 scale. That is not 70 percent correct and does not tell you a raw number of items to answer correctly.
What are the RMA content areas?
The outline has three areas: General Medical Assisting (65 items), Administrative Medical Assisting (30), and Clinical Medical Assisting (115). The counts come from the current 2026 AMT outline.
How do I qualify for AMT RMA certification?
AMT lists five eligibility routes: education, competency or work-based learning, work experience, military, and instructor status. Each has specific requirements and documentation. Use AMT’s current eligibility page to check the route that applies to you.
Can I retake the exam if I do not pass?
AMT’s testing FAQ says candidates may retest after 45 days and may make up to four lifetime attempts for the certification. Check the current AMT FAQ before scheduling another attempt.
Is the AMT RMA the same credential as NHA CCMA?
No. They are separate credentials issued by different organizations, with their own eligibility rules and exam plans. Use AMT materials when preparing for the AMT RMA.
Is this an official AMT website?
No. This is an independent study center from Effortless Math. AMT controls the official RMA exam and certification requirements; this page is not sponsored or endorsed by AMT.
