CURRENT AHIMA EXAM INFORMATION

How the RHIT exam is structured

Scored and pretest items

The exam has 150 items total. AHIMA identifies 130 as scored and 20 as pretest. Pretest items are distributed through the exam and do not count toward the score.

Computer-based testing

Schedule through AHIMA for a Pearson VUE testing-center appointment. AHIMA says candidates may move between answered items, flag questions, and return to them before submitting if time permits.

Time and passing score

Candidates have 3 hours and 30 minutes. AHIMA lists 300 as the passing score. Check its exam page and candidate guide for current scheduling, scoring, and test-day rules.

Exam price, eligibility decisions, timing policies, and application procedures can change. Use AHIMA’s current instructions for your appointment.

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Check RHIT eligibility and application steps

CAHIIM-accredited HIM program

AHIMA currently requires the academic requirements at the associate-degree level of a Health Information Management program accredited by CAHIIM.

Eligible foreign HIM program

AHIMA also lists graduation from an HIM program approved by a foreign association with which it has a reciprocity agreement. Confirm the specific association and educational requirements directly.

Apply, document, schedule

Review AHIMA’s candidate guide, submit the application and transcript or applicable early-testing documentation, then follow the eligibility notice to schedule through Pearson VUE.

AHIMA notes that health informatics programs alone do not currently satisfy the RHIT educational route. Contact AHIMA or your CAHIIM-accredited program about your specific case.

YOUR CONTENT MAP · AHIMA OUTLINE

Plan review across all six RHIT domains

The current AHIMA outline organizes the RHIT competencies into six domains. Use each domain’s weight to guide study time, then practice applying concepts to realistic health-information workflows.

Domain Exam weight Study focus
Data Content, Structure, and Information Governance 19–25% Health-record integrity, documentation, EHR workflow, record sets, standards, MPI, and data governance.
Access, Disclosure, Privacy, and Security 14–18% Access rights, disclosure, retention, privacy and security risk, and identity corrections.
Data Analytics and Use 12–18% Data sources, extraction and analysis, reporting, statistics, charts, and health-information performance metrics.
Revenue Cycle Management 19–25% Coding integrity, documentation queries, audits, denials, billing, case mix, payer guidelines, and payment methods.
Compliance 13–17% Quality assessments, monitoring compliance, maintaining standards, and applying regulatory updates.
Leadership 9–12% Policies and procedures, process review, staff education, collaboration, standards, and project-management principles.

Percent ranges are from AHIMA’s official RHIT content outline. They total as ranges; they are not exact item counts.

PICK A DIRECTION

Choose a study route that fits your gaps

Start with a diagnostic set. Track missed, guessed, and slow questions by domain and by the task they tested.

Map the blueprint

Mark each domain as strong, developing, or needs review using the current AHIMA outline.

Reconnect the workflow

Follow information from documentation and record integrity through coding, reporting, and appropriate disclosure.

Practice decisions

Use short cases to decide what information is reliable, who may access it, and what action fits policy.

Review the reasoning

For each miss, name the rule or competency that resolves it, then practice a fresh example.

Balance review across all six domains. Give additional time to the two largest outline ranges, but keep analytics, privacy, compliance, and leadership in the rotation.

A ROUTINE YOU CAN ADAPT

A four-week RHIT study plan

Choose a pace you can sustain, and reserve time to review every missed, guessed, or slow response.

Week 1 · Baseline

Confirm eligibility and the current outline. Complete a diagnostic and sort gaps into the six domains.

Week 2 · Records and privacy

Review record integrity, documentation, EHR processes, access and disclosure, retention, privacy, and security.

Week 3 · Data and revenue cycle

Practice interpreting reports and metrics, coding and documentation concepts, billing workflows, denials, and compliance checks.

Week 4 · Integration and pacing

Complete timed mixed practice, revisit weak domains, explain why options fit, and confirm appointment logistics.

Use authorized practice materials. Do not copy or share secure AHIMA exam items.
