Eligibility depends on professional-level HR experience and education; passing the exam is one part of earning the credential.

Pick a direction
Choose a study route that fits your gaps
Use missed and guessed questions as signals. Identify the HR decision, the facts and constraints, the relevant policy or law, and the operational next step.
Give extra practice time to Employee and Labor Relations, then use mixed scenarios to connect functions.
A routine you can adapt
A four-week PHR study plan
Adjust the pace to your background and exam date. Keep an error log with the functional area, rule or concept, decision point, and why your first answer missed it.
Week 1 · Business and hiring
Study Business Management and Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition. Review metrics, risk, lawful hiring, sourcing, selection, and onboarding.
Week 2 · Learning and rewards
Study Learning and Development and Total Rewards. Connect training outcomes, career growth, compensation, benefits, payroll, and compliance.
Week 3 · Engagement and relations
Focus on Employee Engagement and Employee and Labor Relations. Practice feedback, performance, complaints, investigations, safety, policy, and conflict scenarios.
Week 4 · Systems and mixed review
Review HR Information Management, then complete mixed practice. Revisit weaker weighted areas and verify current law and exam guidance.
PHR emphasizes U.S. operational HR. Keep it distinct from SPHR’s strategic focus, PHRi’s international scope, and PHRca’s California-specific credential.
