MEET THE EXAM

Know what the NPTE-PT measures

FSBPT uses the NPTE-PT to assess whether a graduate has the entry-level knowledge needed for physical therapist practice. The current outline organizes scored items around body systems, system interactions, and professional or technical topics. It is separate from the NPTE-PTA.

225 questionsFive sections with 45 questions in each.
5 hoursTesting time; a 15-minute scheduled break follows section two.
180 scoredThe remaining 45 are unscored pretest items embedded in the exam.
600 scaledPassing score on a 200–800 scale, not a raw percent correct.

Keep PT and PTA distinct. This guide covers the physical therapist exam. The NPTE-PTA has its own section count, item total, and content outline; jurisdiction rules also affect eligibility.

CURRENT FSBPT EXAM INFORMATION

How the NPTE-PT works

The NPTE-PT is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam delivered in five sections. You receive one overall block of testing time rather than a separate timer for every section. A scheduled 15-minute break comes after the second section; unscheduled breaks use testing time.

Up to 40Questions may be scenario-based, grouped near section ends.
2–5 per caseEach scenario question is independent and can be answered in any order.
Four datesFSBPT schedules administrations in January, April, July, and October.
Scaled 200–800FSBPT reports a scaled score; passing starts at 600.

Score carefully. The raw number correct needed for a 600 can vary between exam forms. A scaled score of 600 is not the same as getting 75% of questions right.

Eligibility and scheduling

FSBPT requires candidates to meet age, education, registration, security, and jurisdiction-approval rules. Licensing jurisdictions can add requirements. The exam is offered at Prometric testing centers, and current deadlines and appointment details should be checked in your FSBPT account and jurisdiction instructions.

The current FSBPT handbook lists limits of three consecutive attempts in a 12-month period and six lifetime attempts at either exam level. Candidates with two scores below 400 are not eligible to test again. Verify current rules with FSBPT before registering.

PICK A DIRECTION

Choose your NPTE study route

Start with the task you need most: understand the blueprint, strengthen a clinical area, or practice pacing and scenario questions. After each set, record the content area and reasoning behind a miss or a guess.

Build your clinical base

Use body systems to organize review, then connect examination findings to evaluation, prognosis, and safe interventions.

Use the scored content map ↓

Practice under realistic conditions

Try a practice set, then use official PEAT to rehearse the computer format, timing, and detailed performance feedback.

Compare practice resources ↓

1

Name the clinical question

Separate what the stem asks from the details that shape a safe response.

2

Connect findings

Link examination results, history, precautions, and functional goals before choosing an action.

3

Explain your choice

State why the best option fits and why a close alternative is less appropriate in this case.

4

Revisit the source

Return to the relevant blueprint topic or trusted reference, then try a fresh item later.

Protect exam integrity. Use original and authorized study materials. FSBPT prohibits sharing or requesting remembered NPTE questions.

A ROUTINE YOU CAN ADAPT

A four-week NPTE-PT study plan

Adjust the sessions to your clinical schedule and current strengths. Keep regular practice, space review across the week, and reserve a longer block for a timed exam rehearsal.

1

Week 1 · Set a baseline

Review the FSBPT outline and take a short diagnostic. Sort misses by body system and reasoning category.

2

Week 2 · Strengthen core systems

Give focused sessions to musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, and cardiopulmonary topics. Practice moving from findings to a safe next step.

3

Week 3 · Connect and apply

Rotate the remaining systems with system interactions, non-system topics, and scenario-based practice.

4

Week 4 · Rehearse and reset

Use an official timed practice option, review the report, and revisit weak areas. Confirm your FSBPT and Prometric instructions.

Spread the work. A five-hour exam rewards steady pacing and consistent reasoning. Build review sessions that you can sustain, then rehearse the longer testing block before exam day.

QUICK ANSWERS

NPTE-PT questions, answered

How many questions are on the NPTE-PT?

FSBPT lists 225 total questions in five sections of 45. The handbook says 45 are unscored pretest items embedded in the exam, leaving 180 scored questions.

How long is the NPTE-PT?

Testing time is five hours. The full appointment is listed as five hours and 30 minutes because it includes the scheduled break, tutorial, and post-exam survey.

What score do I need to pass?

The passing standard is a scaled score of 600 on a scale from 200 to 800. The raw number correct that corresponds to 600 can vary by form.

How many sections and breaks are there?

The PT exam has five sections of 45 items. FSBPT offers a scheduled 15-minute break after section two. Unscheduled breaks are deducted from testing time.

What are scenario-based questions?

Some questions share a clinical scenario. A scenario can have two to five questions, which are independent and can be answered in any order. The PT exam can include up to 40 scenario-based questions.

Is the NPTE-PT the same as the NPTE-PTA?

No. The PT and PTA exams assess different entry-level roles and use different section counts and content outlines. This center covers the physical therapist exam.

How many times may I take the NPTE?

The current Candidate Handbook limits candidates to three consecutive attempts in a 12-month period and six lifetime attempts at either exam level. Two scores below 400 make a candidate ineligible for another attempt. Check the current handbook for details.

Is this an official FSBPT website?

No. This is an independent study center from Effortless Math. FSBPT administers the NPTE and controls its official exam information; FSBPT does not endorse this page.
