MEET THE EXAM

What the NCE measures

The National Counselor Examination is a multiple-choice examination used in many state counselor licensure pathways and as one of two examination options for the National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential. The NCE assesses knowledge and skills considered important for effective counseling practice. Your state board or credentialing program sets your eligibility and application steps.

A ROUTINE YOU CAN ADAPT

Make a focused NCE study plan

Use a baseline check to choose what to review next. Keep ethics, assessment, and applied counseling practice in rotation as you work through the outline for your version.

1

Confirm your version

Check the test date and use the matching NBCC outline, handbook, registration instructions, and delivery rules.

2

Take a diagnostic set

Mark answers as certain, narrowed down, or guessed. Tag each miss with the domain and the reason you chose it.

3

Repair one skill at a time

Review the idea, explain it in your own words, and answer a fresh scenario. Give extra sessions to weaker or higher-weight areas.

4

Practice mixed sets

Use timed practice to build steady decisions. Review every guessed answer and plan the next session from patterns in your results.

Protect exam security. Use authorized study materials and original practice. Do not seek, save, or share live or recalled examination questions.

QUICK ANSWERS

NCE questions, answered

Check the exam date first; several common answers change with the July 2027 version.

How many questions are on the current NCE?
NBCC’s current state licensure handbook describes 200 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 160 are scored and 40 are unscored field-test items. A revised 170-question version takes effect July 1, 2027.
How long is the NCE?
The current handbook gives candidates 225 minutes for exam questions, one scheduled 15-minute break, and time for the agreement and tutorial, for a 255-minute total session. The 2027 specifications give 225 minutes for exam items plus an optional 15-minute break. Candidates can review each half before submitting it; after submission and the break, they cannot return to those questions. Confirm your administration instructions.
What are the NCE content domains?
The current blueprint has six work-behavior domains with different percentages from the revised 2027 blueprint. This page lists each version separately; use the matching official NBCC outline for full detail.
What score do I need to pass?
For the current format, NBCC determines the passing point for each form through standard-setting and equating; the current handbook says passing scores may vary slightly by form. The published 2027 specifications set a scaled score of 360 on a 100–500 scale. A scaled score is not a percent-correct value.
Can I take the NCE online?
The current state licensure handbook lists in-person Pearson VUE test centers and online administration through OnVUE. Availability, scheduling, eligibility, and delivery rules depend on your candidate pathway and current instructions.
Is the NCE the same as the NCMHCE?
No. The NCE and the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) are separate NBCC examinations with different formats and content. Use the official handbook for the exam you registered to take.
Does passing the NCE guarantee my counseling license?
No. State boards set their own licensure requirements. Contact your board for education, supervised experience, application, and any other requirements that apply to you.
Is this an official NBCC website?
No. This is an independent study center. NBCC, CCE, your state board, and Pearson VUE provide the official exam rules, candidate instructions, and credential decisions.
