MEET THE EXAM

What the NBDHE measures

The NBDHE assesses knowledge and judgment used in entry-level dental hygiene practice. It combines discipline-based questions with patient cases that may include histories, dental charts, radiographs, and clinical photographs.

350 items200 discipline-based and 150 case-based items.
2 sessionsScience and clinical topics, followed by patient cases.
7.5 hoursTime to answer exam items across both sessions.
Pass / failScale score of 75 is the current passing standard.

Specification update: JCNDE lists updated NBDHE test specifications for implementation in November 2026. The 2026 Candidate Guide includes both pre-update and post-update content distributions. Match your study outline to your scheduled exam date.

CURRENT JCNDE EXAM INFORMATION

How the NBDHE is structured

Discipline-based component

Session One presents 200 questions across scientific foundations, clinical dental hygiene services, and community health or research principles.

Patient-case component

Session Two presents 150 questions across 12–15 dental hygiene cases. Patient histories, dental charts, radiographs, and clinical photographs may supply evidence for decisions.

One item at a time

Questions appear one at a time on screen. The official tutorial is optional. Practice interpreting the full patient record before choosing an action.

Time and score

The two question sessions provide 3 hours 30 minutes for 200 discipline-based items and 4 hours for 150 case-based items. The total appointment is scheduled for 9 hours, including the optional tutorial, breaks, and survey. The score report is pass or fail; the scale ranges from 49 to 99 and 75 is the passing score. The pass decision uses the overall score, not a separate section score.

Break rules and appointment procedures can change. Review the current JCNDE Candidate Guide and Pearson VUE instructions before test day.

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Check NBDHE eligibility and application steps

Current dental hygiene students

A student in a CODA-accredited program may qualify when the program director or designee certifies readiness across NBDHE disciplines.

Graduates and other applicants

Graduates of CODA-accredited programs submit proof of graduation. Graduates of certain nonaccredited U.S. or Canadian programs may qualify under additional equivalency and documentation rules.

Apply through JCNDE

Get or retrieve a DENTPIN, read the current Candidate Guide, submit the application and required eligibility documents, then wait for the eligibility email before scheduling with Pearson VUE.

Eligibility, fees, and licensure requirements are set by the relevant organizations and state boards. Confirm your own route on the official JCNDE page before applying.

YOUR CONTENT MAP · 2026 SPECIFICATIONS

Use the outline that matches your exam date

The exam remains 350 items: 200 discipline-based plus 150 case-based. JCNDE’s 2026 Candidate Guide gives separate distributions for administrations before and after the November 2026 update.

Discipline-based area Before November update After November update
Scientific Basis for Dental Hygiene Practice 61 items 56 items
Provision of Clinical Dental Hygiene Services 115 items 124 items
Community Health / Research Principles 24 items Research Principles and Community Health: 20 items
Case-based component 150 items 150 items

Scientific foundations

Review anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and nutrition, microbiology and immunology, pathology, pharmacology, and the listed science topics for your test date. The updated specifications call out local anesthesia.

Clinical services

Study patient assessment, radiography, care planning, periodontal disease management, preventive agents, supportive services, and professional responsibilities. The update clarifies categories and adds emerging technology topics.

Research and community health

Practice evaluating scientific literature, statistical concepts, research results, population needs, and community programs. Use the distribution for the version you will take.

The JCNDE describes the update as refinements that are not expected to substantially alter preparation. Review the official guide for the exact outline and implementation date.

PICK A DIRECTION

Choose a study route that fits your gaps

Start with an official sample or practice module. For each missed, guessed, or slow response, record the content area and the evidence you overlooked.

Map the blueprint

Use your exam-date version to plan time across discipline and case-based work.

Review the evidence

Connect patient history, charting, radiographs, photographs, and symptoms before selecting care.

Practice clinical judgment

Work through assessment, planning, prevention, periodontal care, and professional decisions.

Check your reasoning

Explain why an option fits, why alternatives do not, and which source or concept resolves the gap.

Do not spend all your review time on the largest section. Rotate through every blueprint area and maintain separate practice for the discipline-based and patient-case components.

A ROUTINE YOU CAN ADAPT

A four-week NBDHE study plan

Choose realistic study blocks and reserve time to review errors. Begin by confirming the test-date specifications and the application or appointment details that apply to you.

Week 1 · Baseline

Read the matching JCNDE outline, take a short diagnostic, and list strengths and gaps across all three discipline areas and case work.

Week 2 · Science and assessment

Review foundational science, patient histories, oral and periodontal assessment, radiographic principles, and image interpretation.

Week 3 · Care decisions

Practice individualized planning, infection control, emergency recognition, periodontal care, preventive agents, and professional responsibilities.

Week 4 · Cases and pacing

Complete timed mixed practice, review every guessed or missed response, revisit weak topics, and confirm test-day logistics.

OFFICIAL EXAM INFORMATION · INDEPENDENT STUDY TOOLS

NBDHE practice tests and study resources

Use JCNDE materials for the current exam specifications and test-day rules. Independent practice can help you find topics to review; confirm format details with the official guide, especially around the November update.
