The distributive property multiplies a factor by each term inside parentheses.

What it means
It lets you rewrite expressions such as a(b + c) as ab + ac.

| 3(x + 4) = 3x + 12 |
| -2(a – 5) = -2a + 10 |
| 5(2 + 7) = 10 + 35 |
Common mistake
Remember to multiply every term inside the parentheses, including signs.
