Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test Study Center
Build a practical review plan for the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test. Start by checking your nursing program’s current instructions: Kaplan offers flexible assessments tailored to program needs, so schools may set different formats, cut scores, dates, and retake rules.
A FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS ASSESSMENT
Know which Kaplan nursing test your school uses
Kaplan Nursing Admissions Testing helps programs assess applicants’ foundational skills and make admission or placement decisions. Kaplan’s current overview names Math, Reading, Writing, and Science, and says schools can choose assessments suited to their needs. Confirm the exact test name and format with the nursing department or testing office that will receive your score.
Before you study: ask the program for its current candidate guide, section list, time limits, calculator rules, target scores, registration steps, and retake policy. Do not assume another college’s Kaplan instructions apply to you.
A COMMONLY PUBLISHED EXAMPLE
One school’s 91-question format
Clayton State University publishes a 91-question online format with four timed sections. This is a useful planning example, not a universal Kaplan blueprint. The official Kaplan overview says its assessments can be tailored to program needs and does not publish a single candidate-facing question count or timing schedule.
Section 1
Reading
22 items · 45 min
Read passages and use details, logic, inference, and purpose to support an answer. In Clayton State’s outline, passages can draw on different general-interest themes.
Section 2
Mathematics
28 items · 45 min
Practice number operations, conversions, ratios, and word problems. Set up the relationship first, then calculate and check units.
Section 3
Writing
21 items · 45 min
Review passage development, paragraph logic, sentence structure, agreement, punctuation, and common writing mechanics.
Section 4
Science
20 items · 30 min
Build a clear foundation in anatomy and physiology. Published outlines include body systems and core concepts such as homeostasis and electrolytes; check the topics your school lists.
The section counts and times above come from Clayton State’s current Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test page. They do not establish the format used at every participating school.
A PRACTICAL STUDY MAP
Review the foundations by section
Use your program’s outline first. Kaplan describes its nursing assessments broadly by four academic skill areas. The checklist below combines that official description with the public Clayton State outline and Mometrix’s current preparation materials; it is a study aid, not an official Kaplan content weighting.
Read for evidence
Reading comprehension
Practice
Answer from the passage, not from outside knowledge.
- Main idea and supporting details
- Author’s purpose, tone, and passage logic
- Inference and meaning in context
- Summarizing without adding assumptions
Edit for clarity
Writing and language
Practice
Check how each choice affects the whole sentence or passage.
- Grammar, agreement, and sentence structure
- Punctuation and common usage errors
- Paragraph order, development, and logic
- Concise edits that keep the intended meaning
Set up, solve, check
Mathematics
Practice
Translate a word problem into a plan before choosing an operation.
- Whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and ratios
- Conversions and units of measurement
- Expressions, equations, and basic algebra
- Proportions and multi-step word problems
Connect structure and function
Science foundations
Practice
Rebuild the core idea behind each body system instead of relying only on memorized terms.
- General anatomy and physiology
- Cardiovascular and respiratory systems
- Renal, digestive, nervous, and immune systems
- Cells, macromolecules, genetics, and homeostasis
Study to the scope your program assigns. Some review books cover material for several nursing entrance exams, which can be broader than your school’s Kaplan assessment. Spend extra time only where your official outline or diagnostic results point.
ASK THE PROGRAM FOR THE RULES
Scores, cutoffs, and retakes
There is no universal cut score
Kaplan’s public admissions page describes assessment and reporting for nursing programs but does not publish one passing score for every school. Ask your program how it uses composite and section results.
Confirm how scores are reported
Your school can explain which report to submit, the required testing window, score validity period, and whether a minimum applies to individual sections.
Check attempts before booking
Application cycles, fees, registration, and retake limits can be set locally. Follow the current instructions from the program that will receive your application.
Plan accommodations early
If you need testing accommodations, contact the school’s testing or accessibility office before you schedule. The school can explain the forms and deadlines.
A score from one campus may not transfer to another or remain valid for the same length of time. Use current written admissions guidance rather than a general score range.
A ROUTINE YOU CAN ADAPT
Make a Kaplan nursing admissions study plan
Begin with the instructions for your school. Then diagnose your skills, study in short focused blocks, and review each practice answer before adding more questions.
Get the current outline
Confirm the exact assessment, test date, sections, timing, permitted tools, score targets, and registration steps with your program.
Take a short diagnostic
Try a small mixed set or section check. Record whether each miss came from a concept gap, a reading mistake, a setup error, or rushed pacing.
Build a weekly rotation
Practice Reading, Writing, Math, and Science across the week. Give more time to your weakest tested skills while keeping each section fresh.
Review and retest
Explain why your answer works and why another choice does not. Revisit missed skills after a delay, then practice with the timing and tools allowed by your school.
Protect exam security. Use authorized study materials and original practice. Do not seek, save, or share live or recalled exam questions.
