START WITH THE OFFICIAL GUIDE

The Dental Admission Test at a glance

The ADA’s DAT is a multiple-choice admissions exam used by U.S. dental schools and select Canadian schools. The current 2026 Candidate Guide describes four sections and a total administration time of 5 hours 15 minutes, including the optional tutorial, scheduled break, and post-test survey.

4 sectionsscience, perceptual ability, reading, and quantitative reasoning
280 itemsacross the four scored sections
5 hr 15 mintotal administration time, including optional components
200–600reported scale scores in 10-point increments

Use the current specifications. The ADA’s 2026 Candidate Guide includes both pre-update and post-update Organic Chemistry specifications and advises candidates to use the content in effect on their exam date. Check the ADA DAT page for the latest update before you finalize your plan.

MAP YOUR REVIEW TO THE FOUR TEST SECTIONS

DAT content sections

The 2026 ADA guide lists the item count and tested skills for each section. Use the current candidate guide and official specifications for the complete topic outline.

Section 1 · 90 minutes

Survey of the Natural Sciences

100 items

Three science areas share one timed section. Practice moving between foundational knowledge, calculations, and interpreting chemical or biological information.

  • Biology · 40: cell and molecular biology, diversity of life, systems, genetics, evolution, and ecology.
  • General Chemistry · 30: stoichiometry, states of matter, solutions, acids and bases, equilibrium, kinetics, thermochemistry, atomic structure, electrochemistry, lab methods, and more.
  • Organic Chemistry · 30: mechanisms, synthesis, acid-base chemistry, molecular properties, spectroscopy, and structural evaluation.

Section 2 · 60 minutes

Perceptual Ability Test

90 items

Build speed and accuracy with six visual-spatial task types. Learn a consistent method for each and practice with clear screen space and a timer.

  • Apertures
  • View recognition
  • Angle discrimination
  • Paper folding
  • Cube counting
  • Spatial relations / 3D form development

Section 3 · 60 minutes

Reading Comprehension

50 items

Read three scientific passages and analyze information presented in the text. The ADA guide says prior knowledge of each passage’s science topic is not required.

  • Locate a detail efficiently
  • Separate a passage claim from supporting evidence
  • Compare statements and infer from the text
  • Use a timing plan that leaves room to check answers

Section 4 · 45 minutes

Quantitative Reasoning

40 items

Work through mathematical problems and applied word problems under time pressure. A digital four-function calculator is available in this section.

  • Algebra and expressions
  • Data analysis, interpretation, and sufficiency
  • Quantitative comparison
  • Probability and statistics
  • Applied mathematics problems

KNOW THE SESSION BEFORE TEST DAY

DAT timing, break, and score scale

The four scored sections total 4 hours 15 minutes. The ADA’s 5-hour-15-minute administration schedule also includes a 15-minute optional tutorial, a 30-minute optional scheduled break, and a 15-minute optional post-test survey.

Scoring since March 1, 2025

DAT scale scores range from 200 to 600 in 10-point increments. They are not raw scores or percentiles. There is no single official passing score; each dental program sets its own admissions criteria.

Plan the scheduled break

The optional 30-minute break occurs after the first two sections. The test resumes automatically when the break ends, so use the time deliberately and return ready for Reading Comprehension and Quantitative Reasoning.

Use the right Organic Chemistry outline

The ADA posted new Organic Chemistry specifications anticipated for April 2026. The updated outline groups content into mechanisms, chemical synthesis, acid-base chemistry, chemical and physical properties, and structural evaluation. Confirm which version applies to your test date.

Official practice questions

The ADA provides practice modules designed to show the kinds of questions and formats used on the exam. Those copyrighted questions are for personal study; use ADA’s current page for availability and conditions.

TURN THE TEST BLUEPRINT INTO A ROUTINE

A practical DAT study plan

Adjust the schedule to your coursework and test date. Keep a short error log and revisit weak areas instead of repeating only the subjects you already know.

1

Set your baseline

Review the ADA outline, take a diagnostic set across all four sections, and record accuracy, pace, and the concepts that slowed you down.

2

Build science foundations

Rotate Biology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. Use spaced review for facts, then solve new problems without looking at worked examples.

3

Practice spatial tasks often

Use short, regular PAT sessions. Track each subtest separately and review the method behind misses before adding speed.

4

Train reading and math timing

Practice passage-based answers from the text and timed Quantitative Reasoning sets. Recheck calculator use, units, estimation, and pacing.

5

Review every miss

Label the reason: content gap, misread, setup error, visual strategy, or time pressure. Write one correction you can reuse next time.

6

Rehearse the full session

Near test day, complete a realistic practice schedule with breaks and section timing. Follow current ADA and Prometric instructions for check-in and permitted items.
