MEET THE EXAM
Know what the CPCE measures
The Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) checks knowledge across eight counseling core areas taught in graduate counselor education programs. CCE says more than 400 college and university counseling programs use the exam to review student learning and compare program results with national data. The CPCE is a program-level comprehensive exam; your school determines when and how you are eligible to take it.
Start with your program. Confirm your approved test date, modality, registration steps, and required score with your CPCE coordinator. CCE describes the CPCE separately from the CPCE-SP; this center covers the CPCE.
CURRENT HANDBOOK · CHECK YOUR PROGRAM’S INSTRUCTIONS
How the CPCE is structured
The CCE content outline assigns 20 multiple-choice questions to each CACREP core area. Seventeen in each area count toward the exam score; three are unscored pretest items. They have the same general structure and are interspersed, so you cannot tell which questions are scored.
The handbook allocates 5 minutes for the test administration agreement, 10 minutes for a tutorial, 225 minutes for the exam, and one scheduled 15-minute break after question 80. An unscheduled break uses exam time. The institution may add an essay or specialty section; the institution scores those additions.
Scoring and passing requirements
CCE reports section and total scores to institutions. Each institution sets its own minimum passing score. There is no single CPCE cutoff that applies to every program, and a practice score is not an official CPCE result.
Use the current handbook for your appointment. CCE’s website describes current administration options as APB and CPCE-ABE; the 2025 handbook also details the APB, Pearson test-center, and OnVUE procedures. Your program coordinator confirms which option your school offers.

PRACTICE WITH PURPOSE
Turn each question into a useful review
CPCE questions draw across counseling theory and practice. After a practice set, connect each missed or uncertain answer to a content area and explain why the strongest answer fits the facts in the prompt.
Name the domain
Tag the question to one of the eight areas before looking up the answer.
Recall the principle
State the theory, ethical duty, measurement idea, or research concept the item is testing.
Compare the choices
Rule out choices that conflict with the facts, scope, or relevant professional standard.
Review the gap
Write one short note about the knowledge gap, then answer a fresh question on that skill later.
Use original preparation questions. Do not seek or share recalled CPCE questions. Follow CCE and Pearson rules for exam security.
A ROUTINE YOU CAN ADAPT
A four-week CPCE study plan
Use this as a flexible structure, then adjust the pace to your program calendar, coursework, and starting point. Your coordinator can clarify the local passing requirement.
Week 1 · Set a baseline
Review the official outline, take a diagnostic set, and mark every question by domain and confidence.
Week 2 · Rebuild weak areas
Study two or three domains per day, using active recall and short practice sets to check understanding.
Week 3 · Mix the domains
Rotate all eight areas in timed sets. Review answer explanations and return to concepts behind repeated errors.
Week 4 · Rehearse and refine
Complete a full-length practice session, review only your remaining gaps, and confirm test-day logistics with your school.
Track accuracy and confidence separately. A correct guess still signals a concept to revisit; a well-explained answer is stronger evidence of readiness.

QUICK ANSWERS
CPCE questions, answered
How many questions are on the CPCE?
The official outline describes 160 multiple-choice items: 20 in each of eight domains. Seventeen per domain are scored, for 136 scored items total; 24 unscored pretest items are mixed in.
How long is the CPCE?
The timed exam lasts 225 minutes. The 2025 handbook describes a 255-minute total session: 5 minutes for the agreement, a 10-minute tutorial, 225 exam minutes, and one 15-minute break after question 80.
What score do I need to pass?
Your institution sets the minimum passing score for its students. Ask your program coordinator about your school’s cut score and any added essay or specialty sections.
Can I register for the CPCE on my own?
Your university must approve you to take the CPCE. Contact your school’s program coordinator for eligibility, registration, and the administration option available to you.
Is CPCE the same as CPCE-SP or the NCE?
No. CPCE, CPCE-SP, and NCE have separate purposes or content materials. This center covers the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE); use CCE or NBCC materials for the exam that matches your program.
Does CCE provide an official CPCE study guide?
CCE says it does not offer an official study guide. It provides a textbook resource list for counseling programs. Mometrix and other third-party materials are independent study resources.
