MEET THE EXAM
Start with the current CIA Part 1 format.
Confirm registration and exam-day policies with The IIA.
The current Part 1 title is Internal Audit Fundamentals. The IIA’s expanded test specifications group the exam into four domains with published weights. Use those weights to guide your preparation, while studying the detailed task statements under each domain.
This independent guide supports study planning. The IIA controls certification eligibility, exam registration, exam policies and designation decisions.
STUDY THE CURRENT BLUEPRINT
Build skill across all four Part 1 domains.
Weights show each domain’s share of the exam.
Foundations of Internal Auditing
Review the purpose and mandate of internal auditing, the charter, assurance and advisory services, independence, the Three Lines Model, and the internal audit function’s role in risk management.
Ethics and Professionalism
Apply integrity, objectivity, confidentiality and due professional care. Practice identifying impairments, conflicts, bias, information-handling duties, and the skills expected of internal auditors.
Governance, Risk Management, and Control
Understand governance roles and culture; distinguish risk types, inherent and residual risk, appetite and tolerance; assess risk responses; and recognize preventive, detective and corrective controls.
Fraud Risks
Recognize fraud schemes and red flags, assess fraud risk during engagements, understand prevention and detection controls, and identify the internal audit function’s role in investigations and reporting.
Domain weights and topic descriptions follow The IIA’s Part 1 expanded test specifications. The official syllabus includes additional task statements and examples within each domain.
A SIMPLE STUDY ROUTE
Turn your review into deliberate practice.
Spend time on both knowledge and judgment.
- 01
Map the syllabus. Rate each task statement by confidence, then schedule extra review for the 35% foundations domain and any weak areas.
- 02
Learn roles and boundaries. Compare responsibilities of the board, senior management, the chief audit executive and internal auditors; connect independence and objectivity to each scenario.
- 03
Apply concepts to cases. For each practice item, identify the relevant standard or principle, the facts that matter, and the most appropriate next action.
- 04
Use rationales to close gaps. Explain why each option is right or wrong, record the underlying concept, and revisit missed topics from the official syllabus.
