ACE Personal Trainer Study Center

Organize your ACE exam review around the credential you plan to earn. ACE offers an NCCA-accredited certification exam and a separate open-book, non-proctored certificate exam. Both use a three-hour limit, but their question counts, passing standards, eligibility, and credentials differ.

FIRST, IDENTIFY YOUR EXAM

Two exams with different credentials

ACE distinguishes its Personal Training Certificate exam from its NCCA-accredited Certified Personal Trainer certification exam. Check your enrollment and exam notice so you follow the right outline, requirements, and scoring rules.

Keep the formats separate. The four-domain blueprint below is for the NCCA-accredited ACE Personal Trainer certification exam. The non-proctored certificate exam has a different format and passing standard.

NCCA-ACCREDITED CERTIFICATION EXAM

ACE Personal Trainer exam blueprint

ACE’s current outline groups 14 job tasks into four domains. The weights show the approximate share of certification-exam questions assigned to each domain. The official PDF says the outline is based on ACE’s 2022 role delineation study; ACE announced it took effect August 21, 2023.

Domain I

Client Onboarding and Assessments

23%

Review client interviews and readiness, health and lifestyle information, behavior-change readiness, movement observation, and baseline fitness assessments.

Domain II

Program Design and Implementation

31%

Study goal-setting, individualized exercise programming, equipment and exercise selection, and safe instruction across different environments.

Domain III

Program Modification and Progression

27%

Review adherence, behavior coaching, handling lapses, monitoring progress, and modifying a program using client feedback and observed results.

Domain IV

Risk Management, Professional Conduct, and Ethical Business Practices

19%

Study safe practice, referrals, privacy, scope of practice, professional standards, ethical business conduct, and staying current.

Use the live outline as your source of truth. ACE says each task is assessed on every certification exam, though not every listed knowledge or skill statement appears on each administration. Check the current outline directory before your test date.

A PRACTICAL REVIEW ROUTINE

Build a focused ACE study plan

Start with the official outline and make your review active. ACE’s study guidance recommends using the outline to see what you know, reviewing weak domains, and practicing application as well as recall.

1

Confirm the credential

Write down whether your exam is the certificate exam or NCCA-accredited certification exam. Save the matching ACE requirements and current outline.

2

Map the domains

Break the four certification domains into tasks using ACE’s current PDF. Give Program Design and Implementation the largest initial share of review.

3

Practice applied recall

Review a concept, explain how it connects to a task, then use permitted practice questions. Record missed ideas and the reason your first choice felt plausible.

4

Adjust and prepare

Revisit weaker domains, use timed practice that matches your exam path, and confirm scheduling, ID, CPR/AED, and technology requirements with ACE.

Keep client guidance in professional scope. This page is for exam preparation, not individualized exercise programming, nutrition counseling, or medical advice.
