How to Use These PSAT/NMSQT Math Flashcards

1

Pick one topic

Use the topic dropdown instead of facing all 84 cards at once. Start with the topics you find hardest.
2

Flip, then mark

Read the front, say the rule or definition out loud, then flip. Mark Know it only when you can explain it, not just recognize it.
3

Practice right away

After a set, solve a few problems that use those rules. Flashcards build recall; worked practice turns them into test-day tools.

Best Order for Studying

If the deck feels like a lot, study the foundational topics first, such as numbers, fractions and percents, and exponents, then move on to algebra, geometry, and data, and review the test facts last. This moves from the skills every other topic builds on to the ones that appear in specific problem types.

Most Important Formulas and Facts to Know First

  • Order of operations: the sequence that keeps every calculation consistent.
  • Exponent rules: product, quotient, power, zero, and negative exponents.
  • Fraction operations: and converting between fractions, decimals, and percents.
  • Percent of a number and percent of change: the backbone of word problems.
  • Slope and slope-intercept form: for reading and writing linear graphs.
  • Area, perimeter, and volume: the core geometry formulas.
  • The Pythagorean theorem: for right triangles and distance.
  • Factoring and the quadratic formula: for solving quadratics.
  • Mean, median, mode, and range: the four measures that summarize data.
  • Probability of an event: favorable outcomes over total outcomes.

Common Mistakes These Cards Help Fix

  • Ignoring order of operations and simply working left to right.
  • Adding or subtracting fractions without a common denominator.
  • Confusing area with perimeter, or surface area with volume.
  • Flipping an inequality sign at the wrong time, instead of only when multiplying or dividing by a negative.
  • Mixing up mean, median, and mode.
  • Treating a negative exponent as a negative number instead of a reciprocal.
  • Applying the Pythagorean theorem to triangles that are not right triangles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PSAT/NMSQT exam?

The PSAT/NMSQT is the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, a digital exam given in the fall, mostly to high school juniors. It has a Reading and Writing section and a Math section, and juniors’ scores are used to screen for the National Merit Scholarship Program. It is also a practice run for the SAT, with the same question styles.

What is the difference between the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10?

The two tests have the same format, content and scoring. The main difference is timing and purpose: the PSAT/NMSQT is given in the fall and is the test juniors take to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program, while the PSAT 10 is offered in the spring, usually to sophomores, and does not count toward National Merit.

Is the PSAT/NMSQT the same as the SAT?

No, but they are closely related. The PSAT/NMSQT uses the same digital format and question types as the SAT, yet it is slightly shorter and a bit less difficult. PSAT/NMSQT scores range from 320 to 1520, compared with 400 to 1600 on the SAT, so the PSAT is a useful preview of what SAT Math will feel like.

Is the PSAT/NMSQT easier than the SAT?

Yes, a little. The PSAT/NMSQT tests the same skills, but its hardest questions are not as hard as the SAT’s top-level questions, and its score scale tops out at 1520 instead of 1600. Most of the math is algebra, linear equations, functions, percents and data analysis, plus some geometry and trigonometry, so mastering those flashcards prepares you for both tests.

What math topics are on the PSAT/NMSQT?

PSAT/NMSQT Math focuses on algebra (linear equations and systems), advanced math (quadratics, exponents and nonlinear functions), problem solving and data analysis (ratios, percents, statistics and probability), and geometry and trigonometry. The Math section has two modules, and a calculator is allowed on every question, though knowing formulas and shortcuts still saves time.

What formulas are given on the PSAT/NMSQT?

A reference sheet with common geometry formulas is available during the PSAT/NMSQT, including area of a circle, rectangle and triangle, volume formulas, the Pythagorean theorem, and special right triangle ratios. It does not include algebra rules like slope, the quadratic formula or percent change, so those are worth memorizing with flashcards before test day.
