A Simple 4-Week HSPT Reading Plan

Week 1 — Main Ideas

Read short passages and state the central idea in one sentence. Separate the main point from supporting details.

Week 2 — Structure

Practice purpose, sequence, cause and effect, and literary elements. Return to the passage for evidence.

Week 3 — Inference and Vocabulary

Make conclusions the passage supports and use context to test a word’s meaning.

Week 4 — Timed Review

Mix passage questions, watch the clock, and review whether each miss came from evidence, purpose, or vocabulary.

Can I use a calculator?

Calculators are not allowed under standardized conditions on HSPT Mathematics or Quantitative Skills. Follow your school’s current directions for the section you are taking.

Is there a penalty for a wrong answer?

The STS interpretive manual says points are not subtracted for incorrect answers. Follow the current directions from your school.
