The Scholastic Testing Service describes this subtest as punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, usage, and composition. It contains 60 items in the published interpretive manual.
Is HSPT part of the Cognitive or Basic Skills area?
HSPT Language belongs to the Basic Skills area. Verbal Skills and Quantitative Skills are Cognitive Skills; Reading, Mathematics, and Language are Basic Skills.
Can I use a calculator?
Calculators are not allowed under standardized conditions on HSPT Mathematics or Quantitative Skills. Follow your school’s current directions for the section you are taking.
Is there a penalty for a wrong answer?
The STS interpretive manual says points are not subtracted for incorrect answers. Follow the current directions from your school.
