MEET THE TEST
What does SIE practice cover?
Understand the scope of this practice resource.
The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) examination is FINRA’s introductory assessment of securities-industry knowledge. It covers basic products, markets, regulation and prohibited practices. Passing the SIE alone does not authorize securities business or complete representative registration.
The SIE contains 80 four-choice questions: 75 scored questions and five unidentified pretest questions. Candidates have 105 minutes to answer and review. The scored outline assigns 12 questions to Knowledge of Capital Markets, 33 to Understanding Products and Their Risks, 23 to Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities, and seven to Overview of the Regulatory Framework. Tutorial and survey time is separate from answering time.
This original study form follows the scored outline allocation and includes explanations for all 80 questions. Its five supplemental practice positions use an editorial allocation because FINRA does not publish pretest identities or domain counts. Raw practice results provide study feedback and do not reproduce official equating or predict a passing result.

QUICK ANSWERS
SIE: common questions.
Understand the format, then choose your next step.
What is the SIE exam?
The Securities Industry Essentials examination assesses introductory securities-industry knowledge, including products, markets, regulation and prohibited conduct. FINRA administers it as part of the qualification pathway for securities professionals.
How many questions are on the SIE, and how much time is allowed?
The official examination has 80 four-choice questions: 75 scored and five unidentified pretest items. Answering and review time is 105 minutes; tutorial and survey time is separate.
What does the free SIE practice test include?
The original study form has 80 questions with explanations for every answer. Its 75 blueprint positions follow the official scored allocation of 12, 33, 23 and seven across the four domains. Five supplemental positions use an editorial allocation.
Which SIE outline does this resource follow?
This resource uses FINRA’s October 2025 SIE Content Outline. Time-sensitive rule values are checked separately against current primary sources. Confirm current requirements with FINRA before your examination.
Can I use a calculator and reference material?
The examination is closed book. Test centers supply a four-function calculator and erasable workspace; online delivery supplies electronic tools. For this practice form, use a four-function calculator and blank workspace without notes or reference materials.
What is the passing score, and can practice results predict it?
FINRA reports the passing standard as 70 on its equated 0–100 scale. An unscaled practice percentage is not the official score and does not establish whether you will pass. Use it to identify study needs.
Does passing the SIE authorize me to conduct securities business?
No. The appropriate qualification examination and registration requirements must also be satisfied. An SIE result alone does not grant authority to conduct representative securities business.
