An element contains one type of atom; a compound contains elements chemically combined. A mixture can often be separated physically. Melting changes state without changing chemical identity, whereas burning forms different substances. An unbalanced force changes motion. Heat transfers energy from warmer to cooler objects, and electrical or chemical energy can become motion, light, or heat.
Ice melting remains water. Iron rusting produces new compounds. These are physical and chemical changes respectively.
Write the steps or relationships that explain the result:
Classify a change before naming it: did the substance change, or only its form? For motion, identify the net force.
Summarize the method in your own words, with a diagram or labeled units where useful:
A change of appearance alone does not prove that a chemical reaction occurred.
Describe how you will recognize and correct this mistake:
Use the mixed practice check linked in the hub. Record the skill you need to revisit and your next study step.
