Explain your reasoning · Choose a measure of center

A set of travel times is 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, and 20 minutes. Find the mean and median. Which is a better description of a typical time here, and why?

Open a sample approach and scoring guide

One possible approach: Mean = 44 ÷ 6 = 7 1/3 minutes. Median = (5 + 5) ÷ 2 = 5 minutes. The median is more representative because the high value 20 pulls the mean upward.

2-point guide: 1 point for correct mean and median; 1 point for choosing the median and tying the choice to the high value or skew.

Try the problem before opening the example. A tutor or teacher can use the guide to discuss your representation and reasoning.
