Worked example 1
A trapezoid has bases 8 cm and 12 cm, and height 5 cm. Find the area.
Use the area formula and substitute the given numbers: A = 1/2(8 + 12)(5) = 1/2(20)(5) = 50 cm².
Answer: 50 cm²
Grade 6 Math · Topic 55
A trapezoid has exactly one pair of parallel sides, called bases (b₁ and b₂). Its area is the average of the bases times the height. The height h is the perpendicular distance between the two bases.

Explore visually
Change both parallel bases and the perpendicular height. The dashed segment shows the height.
Think first: Which measurements determine the area, and which length is the perpendicular height?

Worked example 1
Use the area formula and substitute the given numbers: A = 1/2(8 + 12)(5) = 1/2(20)(5) = 50 cm².
Answer: 50 cm²
Worked example 2
Use the area formula and substitute the given numbers: A = 1/2(6 + 10)(4) = 1/2(16)(4) = 32 in².
Answer: 32 in²

A trapezoid-shaped patio has bases 9 ft and 15 ft and height 8 ft. Find the area.
Answer: 96 ft².
Use the area formula and substitute the given numbers: A = 1/2(9 + 15)(8) = 1/2(24)(8) = 96.
A trapezoidal table has area 72 in², height 6 in, and one base of 10 in. Find the other base.
Answer: 14 in.
Start by writing the calculation clearly: 72 = 1/2(10 + b₂)(6) ⇒ 72 = 3(10 + b₂) ⇒ 24 = 10 + b₂ ⇒ b₂ = 14.
