Write a decimal as a fraction

Separate the whole-number part from the hundredths, then simplify the fractional part.

Think first: For 2.60, what does the 2 represent, and how could you write 60 hundredths as a simpler fraction?

Worked example 1

Convert 0.45 to a fraction in simplest form.

Start by writing the calculation clearly: 0.45 = 45/100. The GCF of 45 and 100 is 5, so 45/100 = 9/20.

Answer: 9/20

Worked example 2

Convert 2.6 to a mixed number.

The whole number is 2. The decimal part 0.6 = 6/10 = 3/5. So 2.6 = 2 3/5.

Answer: 2 3/5

Try this situation 1

A bottle holds 0.75 liter of water. Write this amount as a fraction in simplest form.

Show a worked solution

Answer: 3/4 liter.

Start by writing the calculation clearly: 0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4 (GCF 25).

Try this situation 2

A board is 4.2 feet long. Write the length as a mixed number in simplest form.

Show a worked solution

Answer: 4 1/5 feet.

Start by writing the calculation clearly: 0.2 = 2/10 = 1/5, so 4.2 = 4 1/5.
