Common words can have several meanings. Determine how the word functions in the sentence and what nearby words tell you about its use. A bank may be a financial institution, the edge of a river, or a turning motion. For a familiar word used unusually, pause rather than automatically choosing the definition you use most often.
A firm grip means a secure grip; a firm that sells tools is a business. The surrounding noun or verb changes the interpretation.
