A sentence may define a word, give an example, contrast it with an opposite, or show its effect. Read the whole sentence before comparing choices. Replace the unfamiliar word with a simple phrase of your own, then test whether that phrase preserves the sentence’s meaning and tone. Contrast words such as but and however can be especially helpful.
