A prefix can change direction, time, or negation; a suffix can signal a word’s grammatical role. Roots can suggest a family of meanings, but the whole word still needs to fit the sentence. Keep a vocabulary record that includes a plain definition, one synonym, and a short sentence. Revisit a word after a delay rather than only rereading it in the same session.
